MG MGB Technical - Water Pump Pulley Removal
The water pump's sitting on the bench. The four bolts holding the fan are off and the fan is off. The pulley is still fast to the hub of the water pump. How do I remove the pulley from the water pump? Curt '69 MGB |

IIRC it should come off with the fan, spray with a penetrating/releasing fluid such as PlusGas (ordinary WD40 is not as good) leave to soak as long as possible then tap around back of pulley and it should fall off |

Curt - the hole in the pulley hub is just tight around the projection of the water pump flange. I would play a heat gun or a torch (if you are not particular about the paint) on the front area of the pulley. That should expand the hole enough to pull off easily. Cheers - Dave |

let the chemical do all the hard work whilst you have a cup of tea (or coffee your side I suppose) or a good nights sleep some lads are just obsessed with fire, no need for it yet, a spray, wait and tap and I bet it falls off (breaking your toes as it came off so suddenly) |

Thanks, Nigel and Dave. I'm pretty much there with each of ya... Just making sure I didn't miss something. Nigel, I'm with ya, letting the oil set in. PlusGas - never heard of it, but perhaps it's a Brit thing. Naw, I've never been a fan of WD40. CRC - 55, I think... Anyway... No, you're right. Coffee over tea over here. I'm a bit of rebel, tho... Diet Dr. Pepper. My wife is a coffee fiend... Thanks for the help and support. Curt '69 MGB |

Curt, how about Krell then or the WD-40 Company owned 3-in-One - or WD-40 do a penetrating spray as a WD-40 product but not ordinary WD-40 if you follow me you're not missing out as there's caffeine in that bad doctor's water, and sweeteners, you'll never see 50 if you drink too much of it - who knows it might separate your pulley in seconds if you pour it over it :) |

Along with everything else put the fan bolts back in the pump flange, i.e. through the pulley, and tap the heads while holding the pulley to push the flange out. A tip on refitting. Although I've not had a problem lining up the pulley and flange holes, if you do then cut the head off a bolt of the correct thread, screw that into the flange part way, then fit the pulley over the cut-off bolt. If you leave a long enough thread sticking out you can fit the fan using three of the proper bolts before removing the cut-off bolt. |
