MG MGB Technical - What a noise
I was awaken by a huge blast in my garage and couldn't figure out the source. I thought a can exploded or a compressor hose let go, until I notice my 73 project was leaning over towards the right front. That's when I noticed the blow out. Old tires are not just dangerous on the road. ![]() |

Better blowing like that in the garage than on the motorway like mine did. :o)

There is no doubt that many owners will never wear their MGs tyres out. I only put a new set on when I decided to do a track day, they were 15 years old. But I never replaced the spare, I no longer carry one, relying hopefully on an electric tyre inflator like many modern cars. I could buy a secondhand donut off a scrap Rover 25 for about £10 (I think they fit) but your still buying an old if unused tyre. |

6 years is the recommended maximum, irrespective of mileage. You could probably get away with 10 years. But the blow out is a symptom of de-naturing of the compound, the other symptom is loss of frictional grip and flexibility. I've just "binned' some part worn 9 year old Toyos. The difference in grip levels between them and the new, was quite profound. |

All tyres from 1990 are date marked. Suggest members look them up, and co round the car. Use a pencil and paper, you will forget. |

on the side wall of the tyre it will have the date of manufacture in a four digit code, first two, week of year and last two year see DOT codes near top of this page - http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html |
