MG MGB Technical - What is best shop manual?
I would like to get a recommendation on the preferred shop manual for a 1974 1/2, Rubber bumpered "B". I have a Haynes but sometimes would like more detail.

Bentley, a reprint of the factory one. The 75-on rubber bumper one is a bit sketchy, but has the specifics for that car. The 62-74 one is much better for detail, and most of it applies to the later car, except emissions and electrics. Neither will teach you basic mechanics. FRM

All of them. In my experience, every manual has pros and cons. Different pictures, graphs with better angles etc. etc. It's never bad having a bit of a library. More and more, however, I've been looking to the internet for questions and pictures. Sights like this one fill in where manuals fail.

The Complete MGB - by Robert Bentley. There are several editions covering different years of production. Although not exactly "Complete" in every detail and procedure - it is a re-print of the factory shop manuals and are the best books - hands down. Just to cover yourself - get the version that covers your year car - and then also get the edition that covers the immediate previous years of production cars. IMHO

Get one of these - it actually had the workshop and owner's manual for your specific car. http://www.victoriabritish.com/features/mg/MGABK.htm

Tom until you locate a "Good" manual, you could check out your local Library. I have found books there with info available. Price is right also.

Tom, for inside the car and as an addition to the drivers handbook, I allways would use a Autobooks manual, for work at home, the Heynes is more comfortable. Both of them, as the Bentley's (reprint of the official manual and Special Tuning manual) are very close to the BMC / BL Workshop manuals and cover all the repairs that can be done without very expensive special tools. If you considre upon a roadside rebuilt of the back axle, none of these will be helpfull, even most workshops would only recommend an exchange then. All other details are explaned well enough to guide you to a reasonable result. You should read these manuals with the basic experiance of a mechanic (or even try to think this/his/her way), they are written fore. When i bought my first MG owners workshop manual in the 1970's, i had to learn English first and then learn about the mechanic details for some weeks, reading books about car mechanics training, engine tuning etc.. Dont't be worried about these manuals, all of them are very well made. They do not report upon difficult and extremely complex stuff but upon high precision engeneering of those days. Ralph
