MG MGB Technical - What is this?? MGB GT 76 Rear Suspension~

Your thoughts: Everywhere I look I can't see this part in any catalogue or even a term to describe it. Am I being thick? It connects to the rear anti something bar, don't think it's the anti roll bar, maybe the anti-sway bar or something else. My car is registered August 21 76 so perhaps one of those on the change over. As you can see its snapped at the top, any ideas where I can get a new one or pair? Thanks for any advice or pointing out the obvious. More pics available

It is an antiroll bar link. NOT a standard MGB part. Possibly a Ron Hopkinson modification. The company was taken over by Moss and I believe they closed it down but not certain. You may have to have one made. If you get desparate email me and I"ll make one up for you. Jim

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your reply, I'll have a look around under that name and see what turns up. I have access to a metal lathe and some workshop time so I should be able to fabricate something, thank you very much for the offer though, much appreciated!!

MGB cars had a rear sway bar from 40001 on. This may be an earlier version as the ends are different.

Yes, a Ron Hopkinson ARB, I have one. The top pins of mine corroded and snapped just like that, the replacements (from Moss) just snapped! It's a poor design, as the axle goes up and down the movement of the ARB is continually trying to bend those pins back and fore. I modified the 2nd set by reinforcing the base of the pins, as well as changing the shape of the hole in the bushes from a cylinder to a truncated cone, and tightened the nuts on the pins just enough to take out the free play, not compress the bushes, since then they have been OK. Also use rubber bushes on the top, not the harder poly (which are OK on the bottom)! See http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/suspensiontext.htm#arb

Will-
I can confirm what Paul has said. That is definitely a Ron Hopkinson kit. I also once had a Ron Hopkinson kit on my car and had the same experience with the top of the vertical link rod for the rear stabilizer bar corroding and snapping off.

Here is a photo of the rear sway bar on my 67GT. It travels under the differential instead of the usual type installed on top.

Is this a Ron Hopkinson bar?

Hi, thanks for the replies, thanks for the details Paul - do you happen to know if Moss still sells them? I had a look on the European website but couldn't see anything. May just machine some if I can't find replacements.

Over here this is a generic part from any autoparts store. They come in various lengths, usually with lots of threads so you can cut them off to make intermediate sizes. Like $8 a pair complete with all bits.

I got mine from Moss Derby, which no longer exists, and the RH bar isn't listed on the site. You would have to contact them an ask if they are still available, but I suspect not. Seems to me all you need is some threaded rod from the likes of B&Q and you could make your own, just adding suitable bushes and washers for the top.

Hmm, yeah, thought about the threaded bar but wasn't sure if it would be strong enough, seems it would though. Thanks for the input, I'll see if the MOT man agrees with my handiwork when it's done! Got until the end of November iron out a few other flaws but that's plenty of time. Thanks! Will
