MG MGB Technical - where is the vin?

help
where is the vin in a 1972 MGB?
manfredi

my '69 gt has it under the hood.

Manfredi. The MGB had a car number located on the right hand side (as seated in the driver's seat) in front of the radiator support and directly across from the right hand side of the radiator. It is an aluminum tag and the car number should start with a GH, followed by another letter and a series of numbers. That is used as the Vehicle Identification Number.

72 models should have at least two screen-printed labels, plus a strip painted in body colour. This last is the body number. The screen printed labels will be the chassis or car number (strictly speaking VIN numbers didn't start till 1980) and the commission number. Depending on market there could be anything from 1 to 3 chassis number plates. One should always be on the right-hand inner wing behind the radiator when looking in from the front (not when looking forward from the drivers seat). The others were on North American spec cars and were at the base of the windscreen and on the drivers door shut panel.

Chassis numbers for a 72 model should be screen printed in black and of the form G-HN5 (roadster) or G-HD5 (GT), followed by an U for American left-hand drive or L for other left-hand drive, plus a year letter (B for 72) if North American, then the stamped six-digit chassis number (258001 to 294250 for a 72 model) and a final G for Abingdon assembled.

Commission number plates were mounted on the bonnet lock platform and were of the form G23 followed by an N for a roadster or D for a GT screen-printed in red, a stamped multi-digit number, then a printed Z (for 70 to 76 cars).
