MG MGB Technical - Where to Start?

Gentlemen,
I was asked today to do a full rewiring of a 1978 MGB that is complete. I have been given a used wiring harness from a 1980, that is in exceptionally fine shape, to be used in place of the old one. It looks amazingly like a new harness right out of the box.

That said, what heads up can anyone supply me with in order to make the job go easier? For instance, I suspect that I should just go ahead and pull the entire dash and then flip it over (while still laying in the car)to replace the wires one at a time.

The dash has a sub-harness, before removing the dash be sure you have the replacement dash sub-harness. If not all you need to do is unplug the main harness from the dash connectors. It may be easier to install the replacement harness with the dash removed. Remove the seats, it's easier you move around under the dash without the seats in the car.

Clifton,
Thanks for the heads up. That's what I was looking for.

Take care feeding the new harness into the engine compartment through the firewall. The rubber grommet should be on the harness, so when you are feeding the harness through it will be rubbing against metal edges which can nick the wrapping. I put split cable sheeting around the edges of both holes in the double-skinned firewall.

A late model has a lot of wires to feed through the firewall and a several tails (i.e. branches off to various areas) in the engine compartment. If you let all of the tails dangle backwards it makes for a very thick mass which is harder to feed through and more likely to get damaged. I laid some forwards and some backwards to get a relatively even thickness then taped them in position beforehand.

Paul,
Thank you!

Paul,
Your advice was right on the money. I finished the pull through and routing today, without a hitch.
Thanks!
