MG MGB Technical - Why I save my old stuff
Went on a club trip a few weeks back and found my brake light switch had failed. This, even though I have Dave Dubouis relay system hooked to it.
I dug out my box of electical switches from my spares and found 8 brake light switches. 3 were marked "bad" and of the other 5 only two had connectors that would work with the B. I installed one that has to be an older unit. No shiny metal, brass screw terminals that I build adaptors so my spade terminals would hook up. It works perfectly. Still ordering a spare, but will leave the old one in until it fails. |

It probably never will .... 8-) |

Bruce, I'm of same persuasion. I've a whole pile of used bits that if I'm planning a job I don't tend to use, buying new if I can. Sometimes they gets used if I'm up against it time wise, or the part's quite expensive or not available new. This leads on to the quality of the older stuff often being better than the new. The good and the bad thing about MGB parts is that much of it is still available, so one might not be so inclined to fettle an existing restorable component, if you can buy new off shelf. |

Chris is probably right, an OE switch plus relay should be fine. Does the kit spark suppress the relay coil? I think I used a 1p IN4000 on mine. |

I have a collection of brake light switches. I have also just fitted a relay (with diode) to my brake light switch. I don't know if the switch is original, but it's been fitted for at least 33 years. ![]() |

I have a 60 year old switch in my car, and a I have LED rear lights, I don't expect it to fail anytime soon. |
