MG MGB Technical - Windshield Frame to Body Gasket Sealant

I put a new windshield on my 73 roadster last summer but did not use a sealant under the bottom frame gasket where it meets the body of the car. My thinking was: why seal it if I wasn't ever going to drive in the rain!

Well, I've decided that wasn't necessarily the best decision and now want to add the sealant.

Victoria British has a silacone sealant in their catalog while Moss doesn't provide a sealant at all (even though they specify its use in their widnshield replacement instructions).

I found a urethane sealant at NAPA.

Question is what should I use. I shy away from silacone because of its long term effect when painting etc. (my experience in woodworking and painting.....finishes don't stick to silacone).

Thanks,
BH Davis

Hi

When I replaces my windscreen last year I got a tube of sealant from the local glass shop.
I am sure yours would have the stuff you need.
I am off to the shop today and will note (and post) the product they provided me with if you like.

BH - Silicone sealant is not the best stuff to use, particularly when trying to remove it if the windshield needs to be replaced sometime in the future. The same is true of the poly urethane sealer. It is even harder to remove. I used 3M Bedding & Glazing Compound (non hardening, P/N 08509) on our MGB two years ago and have driven many times in pouring rain and there is absolutely no leaks whatsoever. Cheers - Dave

I used som black sticky mastic. i lifted the edges and squirted it in with a gun. You can always clean any squidge off with white spirit.

ADCOSEAL R-900 Windshield Selant perminetly flexable. This is used under the rubber seal.

Dow Corning 1199 Silicone Glazing Sealant used with PVC/Wood or aluminum. They gave me this (it is gray to match the aluminum frame) to seal the joints in the windsh8led frame.

Thanks everyone. I got the 3M 60509 sealant at NAPA. The description is much like that of the Dow Corning 1199.

Thanks again,
