MG MGB Technical - won't start after installing new exhaust
Hi, I've replaced my exhaust system including manifold, now the car won't start, we even tried towing it to bump start it and it made some popping noises and a couple of bangs but didn't run, any ideas? I'm guessing it might have something to do with me removing the carbs, I'm getting fuel and the plugs smell of petrol and are sparking, i'm a bit stumped!! |

Panic over, after messing about removing the carbs again and reinstalling them I realised that when messing about round the other side earlier I'd put the leads back on in the wrong order, what a doughnut!!! Starts great now!! :) |

How's the exhaust sound now? RAY |

Absoultely magic, my previous one was covered in bandage and sounded awful, sounds great now! |

On the subject of exhausts, and Ray, you may be able to answer this one, I would like to fit a permanently installed Air / fuel meter. Most will have a sensor that has to be welded into the down pipe of the exhaust manifold, but I am not sure where exactly, or is not critical? Then when I do any mods, eg the supercharger, I can check the ratio at all engine speeds and loading and make suitable changes/ Thanks Mike |

Here's where I did mine. It's as far forward as I could put it and still be downstream of the last 'Y' union....![]() |

Thanks Rob, the foto is very helpful. I am enrolling myself in the local TAFE ( adult classes, college.) to learn to MIG weld. I reckon it should be a useful skill to have under my belt! Mike |

Mike, it depends how many carburettors you are running. There's a bloke here with a B which has a catalytic converter as well as the original twin SU carburettors. There is an air/fuel sensor in each of the outer downpipes (cylinders 1 and 4) to adjust each carburettor's mixture correctly. Mike |

Hi Mike, Any chance of getting a photo of his setup? I'd like to see how he installed the cat. Cheers! |

Sorry, Rob, I've not seen him for ages. What's more, there are fewer advantages in running a catalytic converter here these days. All MGBs are now older than 30 years, the magic age when they can get H-plates, an "H" for "historic" added to the end of the numberplate. The H-plate gives you cheaper tax. More importantly you are allowed to drive in the "environmental zone" in the middle of German cities. When they first introduced the zones, it looked like driving older cars would be verboten. They relented and historic cars are allowed in. Mike |
