MG MGF Technical - 2 years, 11months and 20 days - possible HGF

Hi all
It is too early and too dark to know whether the dreaded HGF has struck but the F had all the symptoms of this when driving home tonight i.e clouds of steam, smells like a cooked pair of socks but very little coolant underneath the car. My wife didnt know what the fuss was about until several other motorists flashed her to stop.

Good job there is still just over a week of warranty left which hopefully should sort out the problem.

Comiserations Dave, at least it's the right time of the warranty end!

Hope you get it sorted soon,

Andy

+ with new headgasket and steel dowels...
and if you invest in a few clips and hose connectors from Mike Satur (at extra cost something like 40 pounds) your car should be pretty much ok from here onwards.

Good luck.

Just curious, have you had the 3YR service yet?

(hello to the Queen vic natter!)
Andy

Hi Andy
Hope Washington is good. Better than Glasgow or TB I suspect.

BTW I found all the coolant on the garage floor this morning. Veronica told me that she had noticed steam coming from the car yesterday on the way to work and had dismissed it belieivng it was from the car behind!!!!

When I was at the QV natter last week I was making enquiries about the costs of a 3 yr service and had not yet decided where to take it - decision now made as Time Tees at Upminster can do both jobs.

Just make sure that the dealer knows that the driver stopped immediately the steam was detected, or they'll squirm.
Hugh

I agree with Hugh, probably best to say the car was stopped immediately in order to keep both dealer and warranty company happy.

Make sure the engine is thoroughly checked over though - if the car was driven for a distance after the HGF, then serious engine damage could have resulted.

Advice sought

My 96 VVC (45K miles) has just suffered HGF. I'm new to this subject and having received several estimates of £700 - £1000,I'm likely to use non dealer garage.(£400 - £500 including head skim)
Do many owners use non dealers, or am I taking unusual risk?

Any advice welcomed.
Jeff Brookes

Jeff,

Yes, I've just used a non-dealer for my HGF on a 1998 VVC at 46K miles. I used Tech-Speed Motorsport, near Leamington Spa. They've looked after my car since it came off private lease (and maintenance) at 3yrs old. Can't recommend them highly enough.

I also took the opportunity of the head being off, to have it fully ported by K series guru, Dave Andrews. Not a cheap route to take, but there aren't that many times you take the head of an F.

Dave found worn valve guides and a cracked exhaust valve, so maybe it was a good decision after all!

See my posting on the other thread.

Also be aware that whilst Techspeed may not be an MGR dealer they are probably one of the most qualified to work on the MGF/TF as they also prepare (or did) the MGF racing cars for the MGF Cup and as others say what they dont know is not worth knowing. So they may not be an official MGR dealer but they are one of the best for the MGF - the same may not be true about other non MGR dealers (or even actual MGR dealers).
