MG MGF Technical - 2nd MGF 4hrs in & Breakdown!

Hi All,

Picked up my new 'F today. Used to spend hours on these forums had a 1995 'F, one of the first off the lines that was always going wrong. Sold her in '03 and had the bug ever since.

Anyways, 1st the ABS light (it's a 2001 VVC by the way), then Power Steering light & failure, SRS light on, then the engine management light followed by lights out and finally engine cuts out.

I'm reckoning the alternator's shot anybody agree or had similar symptoms but a different diagnosis?

Cheers in advance....

yes, sounds like when my alternator failed. Was quite off putting to see the lights coming on one by one. Managed to jump start it (leaving the battery box connected) and get it to a garage who swapped the alternator and I have not had an issue with it since.

Alternator for sure, not nice, but could be so much worse!
Somebody last year had his new TF for 45 minutes before it was ground into the Armco by a dozey Polish HGV.

Cheers Chaps!

Managed to find an Auto Electrician that was open today. Quick jump start and headed straight down there.

Yep it's the altenator - thank god must admit I was a bit worried with all of the warning lights!!!

Should be on the road Monday lunchtime - can't wait!!!

Phew! Good news Graham - enjoy the open road in your new MG! :o)

Ah the life of the 'F owner - how I've missed it!

Wipers went pop today, just had the bulkhead cover off and the linkage has gone where the x2 lower arms meet (see item 18 here http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID000269.

Just ordered the upgraded linkage from Mike Satur - anybody know of a quick fix that could get me through the weekend?

If the problem is that the balljoint has separated, wrapping the ball in something like insulating tape and squeezing it back together has been known to work.

Failing that, try Rain-X - a silica compound developed for motorcycle visors, but works extremely well on windscreens. The droplets run off so well that light to moderate drizzle won't be a problem. Having said that, my experience of Lancashire rain is that it doesn't do 'drizzle'...
bandit

Cheers bandit, the tape worked a treat managed a quick run over to Wigan on typically wet November afternoon no problems.

One more item added to the boot - 'just in case', x1 roll of Duck Tape, bet that wasn't in the original owners handbook!!!
