MG MGF Technical - 30%+ from 1.8

I have said before on the board that I was never a person to go for bhp figures but I curious to find what my car’s output was after an interesting run at silverstone, (with two people + a tent + three people’s camping equipment on board) .

Car went on the rolling road Saturday am and did four runs. This resulted in figures, which gave us a definite 30%, plus over original figures.

I had covered 900 miles since mike added some more mods to my car (52 mm throttle body + new MS exhaust manifold + Vader filter system +MS exhaust + cat modification + head mods) this has been on all types of roads including todays 300 mile run( with rosemary holding on …sorry csmgf did not have time to contact anyone) through some of the best road roads in the west of Scotland. These are roads that I have covered many times with the old set-up and there was no comparison to the old car
.
The car now pulls easily from 3000rpm, at 4000+ it starts to shift quickly all the way up to 6200 when it has reached the top of the power band. Third gear was always the get up and go gear but now 4rth has become another asset especially on motorway over taking.

The rev range upto 6000 is progressive and smooth and feels to be breathing very, very freely.
On the fuel consumption figures there is very little loss on using the right foot with consideration. Obviously foot hard down has it consequences but not excessively so. A strange but welcome quirk is that on the motorway cruise speed you can actually lift of the pedal right back until you are just touching it to maintain speed. I think this is possibly due to the free flowing of the gasses.
I wanted a vehicle that could still be used for daily transport but could be enjoyable on fast road runs and track days………………….well I have got it now.
…Gerry (with a smile)
ps david j ,you should have waited …..

fantastic!!!

with you, new and improved, and DC also kicking out a bit more power, I can't wait until I get my car back.

6 weeks off the road, is doing my head in.
I am even begining to learn the train timetable, and my only enjoyment is driving the works 1.8 diesel astra van.

hope to be back out there with you guys soon.

Gerry,

Out of interest do you have any before and after RR tests for the Vader and manifold add on's. By the sounds of it you have a nicely sorted car there and I'm sure the aural tone is spot on too.

So welcome to the club, amongst those who have recently had headwork done, Dave Livingstone, Kingsley and myself (those I know about) we are all in awe of the difference porting work has on the car character. Our own recent RR day saw Kingleys MPi max out at about 175 (?), mine (Mpi) at 162 and Dave's VVC at 172. For those interested in having just that little more oomph porting is an exciting way to go. My only recommendation is to ensure that the suspension and brakes are up to the job first, corners don't half approach fast now. :0)

Paul you won't be disappointed. Start saving for the Emerald and the MTB's :o)

i dont have numbers for the manifold/vader setup on there own as the units were all done at the same time and i would'nt have been on the rolling road as i said in the post. i have driven cars with high bhp which could not run below 5.5k .on my car this is not the case. the porting and valve arrangement (without cam change and no lumpiness) has given a free reving engine. in my youth i had a porsche engined autocross buggy and what we were looking for was bhp per ton. as the vehicle was light wieght we had a fantastic ratio. so i think power to wieght ratio + useable power range + (your right )good balanced brakes + suspension that you can be confident with( and ms rear neg camber)will give a better result than high bhp .i mean no offence to the guys with high bhp but its only part of the picture.
the noise from the car now is great. no use for the deep throat brigade, it has a rasp and bark like the good old days but it its only the people behind that hear it as the cars moving foward so quickly.
i take your point re the brakes, they were done first ....trophy fronts with ceramic pads and slotted rears with road/race pads ...more to follow!

paul its worth waiting for but give me some pity as its only been back two weeks and is now away into get the bodywork sorted for another 4 weeks . give the child his favourite toy then take it away again ...pos a case for the hauge court of human rights

Aye Gerry, but picture this..

...I get my car back all new and improved, and i've got to run her in for 3,000 miles :-/

now that is hard.

paul weatherill

paul

thats not hard!!!!!

hard is>>> having to agree with romemary to take her on sunday "doon the watter to rothsey" to have a picnic on the beach so that i could do the western run ending up thro glen orchy. me and a picnic!!! geeez you know the full thing...chairs ,sanys, juice(eeeech)tartan rug and wait for it>>>sunscreen lotion. if i wanted fies on my lunch i would have raked the dustbins. we stayed 56.7 mins and 45 of them was taken up looking for a noise that was not there , at least anyone passing by thought i was broken down rather than picnicing , smart idea, kept old gold wheels street cred.

now i always though the beach was somewhere you found whales not somewhere to sit .( i got great pics of one of h.r.h ,s subs comming up the clyde not that is real bhp) i was under the idea that the old people sitting on the beach or laybyes on a sunday were just waiting for the call to the big carpark in the sky.

just got back from the bodyshop to ask if i could have her out to lay on fridays track night....++++++++++ off he said so no track night , how ever if its a good night may take rosemaery out a run ( via the track ) in the police car
paul you know it wont be long now ...i know god made the world in 7 days but look at the cr** job he's done in parts ... mike takes longer but it right. and here endith the leason....god the mind is going and its only been away 5 hours....the car that is ...

Gerry, just a bit of advice that may save you a pasting and a higher octave in your voice, learn how to spell your wife's name correctly;-) or are there several women in your life??
Mike.
PS you know my thoughts on packed lunches;-)
mike

<<PS you know my thoughts on packed lunches;-)>>

I am sure Rosemary's pack lunches are a far cry from the offerings we were given on the Highlander ;-)

paul weatherill

paul
not even in your wildest dreams could what we got on the highlander be descibed as packed lunches. we used ours as a burglar alarm left in mikes boot when he gave us the priveledge of using his trusty steed. it was very effective as the were no attemted breakins to his boot during this time. (but there were a great deal of flies and a hazzy mist around the rear , the cars rear i mean not mikes ....or do i mean.....enough of this talk ..i must away and repell this banking dragon and i do mean banking.. they are knocking on my door wanting money ....fooled them there is none.....gerry

p.s mike
in gods house there are many rooms as in gerrys mind there are many women. some are called romemary and some rosemary but when you get to my age whats in a name...its all in the mind ( there is nothing left in the body so you cant do the octave damage when there is no active compartment).
gerry

Aye, got it to come Gerry 8-(

All this talk of packed lunches disturbingly reminds me of Linford Christie - now that was a lunch pack!
John Ponting

mike

maybee john has a point, perhaps we should have stuffed our packed lunches down our fronts instead...eh big boy
