MG MGF Technical - 304mm disks on 15' wheels

I'm looking to get a bit more confidence out of my brakes, but I don’t want to go to 16" wheels. I know that the 304mm disks are said not to fit the 15" rims, but having measured the clearance it looks like they might. So the question is; Has anyone ever tried fitting 15" wheels onto hubs with the 304mm disks on? Perhaps someone who has up-graded to 304mm disks and 16" wheels. The only other option looks like the Hi-Spec 280mm discs and princess callipers, they look good but Hi-Spec have a VERY bad reputation for supply and customer service.

Even if the discs fit there is no way the AP calipers will fit, it's very close on the proper 16" rims.

Your best bet is the Hi-spec route but you could try going through one of the third parties resellers like http://www.fishersportscars.co.uk/index.html?products/fs_hispec they are likely to keep stock.

Hi Mike,

If you get the rest of the braking into peak condition, you might find the standard braking is enough for you. Nothing gives confidence like a good solid pedal, and if your pedal is mushy now it'll be no less mushy with bigger discs. In my quest for the perfect brake pedal, I reckon the braided lines were the best value. A Cup racer I spoke to had tested the 304mm setup and found there was bigger braking force but much less feel, so they were fairly sure that in racing the standard brakes were better suited to the F chassis.

Did you look at Satur, or MGOC sales ?

It's been Roger Parker couple of years ago who suggested 280mm disks with the standard caliper (+adapter).
They fit under the old VVC 15" inch rims.

No option to getting 304mm disks and Trophy/TF calipers to other then the TF or Trophy rims.
The AP (Trophy/TF) setup is said to fit into 16" 6-spoke rims, when you add 17mm adapters to each front wheel.

I went down the HiSpec route fitted with Mintex 1155s under 15" rims. I loved them. Yes, they were sometimes a pain to deal with, but I don't regret getting the brakes.

I tracked the car many times with my 15" rims and my HiSpec brakes out performing many 16" AP shod cars. I do have a late braking reputation tho! ;-)

There is no other comparable option for 15" 5 spoke VVC wheels. Worth the pain imho.

Good luck!

Paul

ps. Always prefered the feel from the 15" rims to the 16" ones anyway.

pps. I used 1177s at the rear. Balance, for me, was fine.

Mike

This is the link for the 280mm dia brake kit and it is designed to fit under the 15" wheel.

Apparently this kit can only be used in comjunction with the 15" VVC wheel.

The VVC wheel has rather more clearance than the other styles of 15" wheel... in fact so much so, I am wondering whether they might fit over the MG 304mm AP discs as well... Anyone actually tried this?

Tim, next time I am round, I'll bring my 'spare' VVC alloy with me to try on your car? R888 on 15" rims are sooooo much cheaper than 16"!!!
