MG MGF Technical - 4 Wheel Laser Tracking
Hi all, I am carrying out some work on my suspension :-)and will require the tracking set up again when finished. Does anyone know of a good tyre or Garage in the surrey area who will carry out the works properly? Recommendations appreciated Don |

RSI Tyres accross the road from the main Ford Dealer in Redhill. They should sort you out and normally give discounts if its a slow day. Dave |

Don Slightly off thread in that I don't know of a garage in Surrey but have just had mne done by Elite tyres in Rainham at a cost of £29.95 - the local Rover garage wanted to charge over £140 for the same job. Make sure the car is loaded with a full tank of petrol as per the handbook when the 4 wheel alignment is done. David |

Thanks david i wouldnt have thought about that. £30 sounds much better than £140 :-) cheers don |

Can anyone explain why MGR dealers ask well over £100 for this? Is it purely extortionate hourly rates or do they actually do something different/extra? regards Pip |
Pip |
Hi Pip, MGR dealers charge a massive 79 pounds an hour approx. They also have to pay for the smart showrooms, coffee machines for customers, sales people, reduced profit margins on cheaper new cars, lavish showrooms etc. The tyre dealer has a lot less overheads so can do it cheaper. NO I DO NOT WORK FOR MGR. They still rip you off and I will always support small and good garages or do it myself where possible. Cheers Chris |

If you take 1 1/2 to 2 hrs for a thorough 4 Wheel alignment plus a "Use of very expensive equipment charge", then £75 to £100 may be a ball park figure. If you want to pay £25 for a quick job on cheap equipment, then go ahead but not on my car. Geoff F. |

Looking at the cost of tracking, add the cost of adjusting the hydaulastic stuff, i have decided to take my car to a garage and have the lowering knuckles fitted combining all of the above...very cost effective by all counts. watch this space :-) don |

I had new tyres put on a few weeks ago, They were filled up with Nitrogen.....A new one on me. No moisture to corrode wheels etc £2.50 charge mind. don |

G. Farthing said <If you want to pay £25 for a quick job on cheap equipment, then go ahead but not on my car.> I would agree but to label all tyre equipment fitters with this generic label is a bit strong. The BBS archives are full of recommendations for tyre suppliers such as Elite at Rainham who have a workshop of the very latest equipment and certainly beat the very poor facilities at the main dealer in Romford. I suspect that there are a mixed bag of dealer facilities in other parts of the country too. If you have found a good dealer stick with them but don't tar all tyre dealers with the same brush. Re nitrogen in your tyres "Another interesting point is that most of the F1 teams use dry nitrogen gas to inflate their tyres instead of air. This is done for two reasons. Firstly the moisture content of air is variable depending on the local weather conditions and this differs considerably between some of the exotic locations on the GP calendar. By using dry nitrogen gas the tyres will behave in a predictable way wherever they are being used. The second reason is that air is a mixture of nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%). Oxygen gas is far more reactive than nitrogen and at the high operating temperatures of F1 tyres (> 100°C) the oxygen reacts with the tyre, reducing the total pressure inside. Using pure nitrogen removes this problem and tyre pressures remain far more consistent." from http://www.chm.bris.ac.uk/webprojects2003/hancock/pressure.html jt |
