MG MGF Technical - 5800 rpm on VVC help please look.

I have fitted new mls gasket, uprated oil rail. Reprofiled cams from MS. engine wont rev past 5800. So I striped again and replaced the VVC mechanisms( they were a bit noisey) changed the hdu and shaft. swoped the cam sensor. Checked and retimed belts and still Can't rev over 5800 rpm although engine sounds and runs very well. Its a 98 using mems 2j im sure. Im ripping my hair out now. the only thing i havent changed is the spark plugs as they were in good nic. I have done the ecu reset by pressing pedal 3 times with key turned on. PLease help ANY IDEAS PLEASE>

yes thanks thats the first thing i looked at and multi connectors connect one way and they are all connected including the cam sensor. I retried swoping the cam sensor but still no joy. The vvc mechs and timing were done in line with daves post on the net for sync of vvc's .It all worked fine b4 replacing gasket and upgrading to ms reprofiled cams. I have sent ms a email for solution in case related to supplied cams. So will see what he has to say. But if anyone can help please do so. If the timing cause is it likely to be retarded or advanced. ?? cheers

This is suggestive of a sensor fault. It is possible on a VVC to connect the cam shaft sensor and the VVC actuator cables the wrong way round on pre-2001 VVC models, and this is what I'd check first.

If this and the crankshaft sensor check out okay, I wonder whether the cams are timed correctly?

thanks rob. the engine is now running fine and freely reving 0ver 7000 rpm. I checked the connections again and they were correct. MS suggested could be oil sensor connected to hdu. Any way i drove to work bliping the throtle to maintain momentum of revs and it seemed to right itself. So not sure what the cause was? probably vvc builders curse of some decription. I was all very strange as i took my time making sure the job was done 100% the second time around. But couldn't really rev it to much on the drive as the neighbours would go spare( have a TT box fitted) lol. Thanks to all.

Again, this does suggest an electrical problem - perhaps a slightly dirty or corroded contact that has now sorted itself? Worth thinking about should the problem recur.

Good result, and glad normal service has been restored!
