MG MGF Technical - 6 year service - what'll be wearing out?

Hi all

She's due her sixth yearly service soon. I'll be taking her up to Tech-Speed gain, in whom I have complete trust!

Just as a heads up, more for myself than for them, what can I expect to be in need of replacement at this stage? I seem to recall that various hoses and pipes have been mentioned as being on their way out at this point. It'd be nice to mention to TS what we suspect needs doing...

Cheers,
Jamie

Tech speed will advise, no point in teaching them how to suck eggs!

But in the back of your mind I would expect the coolant, brake fluid, underbody pipes, radiator, toe links, suspension bushes, brake discs + pads. All or none of these could be on the cards, all wear out - some will have been replaced already

A lot will depend on how she has been used and even more important how she has NOT been used - where she is left when not in use.

Jamie, just had my 6yr done at MGFC. I Need new rear bushes but apart from that and the stepper needing adjustment eveything else was OK.

It all depends on some basic data. How many miles?? Garaged or left out to corrode ?? Day car or weekend/holiday toy ??. Boy racer or retired gentleman ?? Amount in bank Account ?? Are you going to keep it or sell ?? etc.etc.
Everybodies circumstances are different. Talk to your service shop and decide.

Jamie, Techspeed usually have a pile of parts ready in case parts need replacing. These are typically components of the cooling system, including the radiator, the steel under body coolant pipes, rubber hoses etc etc. Then there are other sundries that Will has already mentioned: brake pads, discs so on and so forth.

Are you getting any suspension work done at the same time? And are you considering their gear linkage kit? Well worth it IMO :o)

Hi all.

I'm very aware that Techspeed will spot everything - I'm just trying to work out how much I need to brace myself! I've done discs and pads recently, she's had a new radiator, so it sounds like bar under body pipes there's not a lot 'due' to go wrong. She's a daily driver, btw, and I do 6000 pa. Unfortunately she lives on the street.

Rob - I'd love some suspension fettling, but the dwindling bank balance and the house we're buying tomorrow (the one preventing me from going to Silverstone - grr) mean that massive expenditure isn't on the cards. Are there any cheaper suspension tricks they could play whilst I was there? I've heard that polycarb bushes are a good thing - worth it on their own? Not too worried about gear change; found that once I'd shortened the stick they were acceptable.

Have fun this weekend, guys :-(

One question that has not been asked. Was the camshaft belt changed at the 5 Year Service ( or previous HGF)?? If not, then this needs to be given more priority than "nice things to have".

Yep, bit that bullet last year.

Having just, luckily under warranty, had the cambelt go on a recent import from Japan, I would say ensure cambelt checked. I think I saw somewhere else on this bBS that mechanic said must be changed at 5 years - huge money for the warranty people, and nasty jolt for me three weeks after acquring.

PS it had only done 45,000
