MG MGF Technical - A/C failure

Hi guys,
I have a quick question you may be able to help me with. Recently I went to switch on the air conditioning in my F and was rewarded with warm airflow while the temp gauge was set on cold. On switching off the A/C unit the ambient air was actually cooler. Before I run off to the main dealer for them to have a butchers is there a fuse which may need changing as I have been stung this way in the past when the head lights failed and I was charged 25p for a blade fuse and a full hour for fitting, (sorry mate there’s nothing we can do about it).

Thanks for any ideas you may have

Air-con unit probably needs re-gassing. Happened on one of my old cars (non MG). How old is the car?

Difficult without some simple checks.
Is the 'Heater' fan working Ok. Viz. the A/C only operates with the fan 'on' ??
Is the 2nd Radiator Fan running ??. It is permanently 'On' with A/C.
Check Underbonnet fuse 3 and Inside car fuse 15

The car is 8 years old, however I had the unit serviced Oct last year. The heater fan is working although I need to replace the heating relay as it only works on settings 3 and 4. But thanks for the suggestions re fuses.

Did you have the fan on positions 3 or 4 when you tried the aircon?

Yes

Does the light come on on the A/C switch. If it does the A/C should run. Can you hear the compressor clutch coming in (alters the revs a little as it starts) and the radiator fan running. If the refreigerent pressure drops the pressure switch won't let the comressor clutch engage. My car looses pressure slowly until the A/C is hardly cooling and then the pressure drops until the comressor doesn't start. If I regas the thing works again for a few weeks.

The light does come on however I havent noticed the revs altering recently (must remember to turn the radio down) Ill check that on the way home.

It looks like the system needs to be regased, when this is being done they should have a probe that can sniff if there is any gas leaking. The A/C should be run at least every week even in winter infact use it with the heater and the air is dehumidified and stops the windows fogging up.
Andrew Regens

Ran the A/C last night but didn’t detect and change in engine cadence. Checked all the fuses and all intact. Looks as though it needs topping up, have it booked in for next week and have been quoted £80 for the top up. Does this sound reasonable?

Sounds about right.
When it is regassed, use it or lose it!

My car looses the gas. They can put a dye in the system too. Then shine a UV light on it to see if it's leaking. IT might be worth considering.

I have just had the volvo re-gassed. The garage say that typically they need doing every 5 years. It was done at my local ex-Rover dealer and cost £50+ VAT for a complete drain down and refill.
