MG MGF Technical - A technical quiz :)

Hello everyone I just subscribed to the club cos I m looking for answers for my MG problems :) and i believe that when u have ot deal with a Brittish car then a Brittish person knows more than a Greek does :).

So here is the quiz.

every morning when i weak up to go to work i find 2 pink stains underneath my car in the part between the left front wheel and the front bumber. 2 pink stains nothing more or less.

Somebody suggested that is my breaks fluid because when i wash the wheel with a high pressure water sprey i get the same pink liquid coming out from the bolts around the MG badge.

Liquid coolant in my car is blue colour.

Break Liquid is brown colour.

Any ideas what can this liguid be???

Thanks for ur time.

Oh i forgot....I m talking about a 10 month old MG TF 135 :)

This is a challenge! There aren't many fluid pipes in this area, other than the brake lines and radiator.

Check the condition of the brake lines to exclude any posibility of leakage.

Then check the condition of the radiator hoses and the radiator itself - it is possible that a stone may have holed the alloy radiator.

If none of the above, then I am stumped!
Rob Bell

Probably a hose clamp not positioned correctly on the radiator allowing some leakage, also check the radiator bleed screw isn't leaking. The coolant in the TF should be O.A.T. which has a pinkish tint if it has been changed (why at 10months old??) to a blue coolant then try and have a look under the car to pinpoint where the loss is from.

...hmm .. did they have strawberry icecream in Longbridge factory ?
;)

I get my coat...

what colour is AC coolant?
Will Munns

.. tends to oily yellow IMHO, from memory

I am not sure how familiar you are with the MGF.

Are you sure that the blue coolant you are talking about is not the windscreen washer water under the bonnet?

Cracked Windscreen washer bottle perhaps?

It happened on my wife's X1/9

whatever keep an eye on coolant levels at all times!

Neil

Okay thanks to all who replied..I did a check on my car.

1.I opened the boot

2. Undone the bolts that hold the radiators metal cover.

3. The lickage comes from the raqdiator.

I dont know the technical terms in english so ill try to describe where the lickage comes from.

Imagine the axle that hold the two front wheels.

Radiator looks like a metal square plate. at the back of the radiator there is a gap. U can look through this gap when u undo the radiators metal cover.

On the bottom end of the radiator it was all wet from the fluid and dreeping. I get lickage after driving long distances few drops then stops.

I opened the bolt that's on the riadiator that u do when u want to fill it with liguid but it was full.(however the colour on this liquid was pink)

I closed that bolt very tight to check if the lickage was dew to a lose bolt but same thing hapened this morning.

4. As for why i changed the coolant after 10 months .....well driving the car summer in greece makes it very hot. And one day the temperature went up and the container at the back of the car when i checked was empty. it used to have water in it.

Since i changed to Shells blue liquid coolant it has never happened again. And the level of coolant in the container hasnt drop. So at least that shows that its not the coolant that is dreeping.

So???? I m as confused as most of u are lol

waiting on opinions

FV

Did you drain and flush the pink (OAT) coolant out when you refilled with the new shell coolant??
mike

FV
When you changed the coolant to blue, did you first drain and flush/wash out the cooling system?
g hampson

Must refresh screen before typing !!!
g hampson

Ehhhhhhhh nope i didnt drain it.

Is it very very very bad that i didnt or just bad??? :)
F.V

FV
It's not very good, if you mix OAT (pink) and normal glycol (blue) based anti-freezes it can cause the fluid to turn to a gel in certain instances it depends on the brands of anti freeze you have mixed.
My advice?, take it to a garage explain what you have done and ask them to drain, flush and refill your coolant system.
Tell them about the small leak you have and ask that they investigate that also.
Good luck

F.V.,
immidiately follow Gareth advise.

This is some know-how about the coolant stuff

The plastic bolt must not be tightened to much. It will break at any time later. Get a spare of p/n PYP100500.
Dieter

okay ill do that thanks all....

What does OAT stands for??
F.V

Organic Acid Technology, it's used to provide better corrosion protection in alloy engines.
If you are struggling to get hold of it try a VW or AUDI dealer as they've been using it for about 7 years in their cars - well they have in the UK, presume it's the same in the Hellenic Republic.
Good luck

Know all about not tightening the plastic rad bleed screw, broke three in a row all badly made with air bubles in the plastic!!!! Plus prob due to my heavy hand to stop it leaking!!!!!
