nothing sinister.

I would have overfilled with water to flush out the old, it will run over and off without getting anywhere dodgy.

Smelling new screenwash is no shock as it's quite smelly.

Not too many years ago, I was involved in environmental risk assessment for a very large UK company.

Obviously, Legionella (Legionnaires’ disease) was a very high priority. Basically you will find the Legionella bacterium just about everywhere you look (or sample) the main thing to avoid is inhaling small droplets of water that contain the Legionella bacterium.

To cut a long story short, we had tested the water bottles of the cars in the car park, from information from our Legionella Consultants. Yep, every single car carried a worrying level of the Legionella bacterium. Coupled with the way in which this is 'delivered' to your windscreen, I now change my water every week, add a small amount of disinfectant and sometime hold my breath when in other peoples cars.

One of our conclusions, back up by our Legionella Consultants, is that the 'random' occurrences of individual Legionnaires’ disease is most probably caused by car washers!
Ant

That sounds like a case of paranoia, human bodies can take a lot of punnishment our immune systems are pretty tough.

Thanks for the info mind.

Home spas are another Public Health issue to be concerned about - so don't be too hasty to ignore what Ant is saying, but this is the first time I've heard of an automotive risk for Legionaires!

Darren, disconnect the wiring loom, spray contacts (both ECU and loom plug) and reconnect. Should do the trick (fingers crossed!)

Erm, isn't screen wash an alchahol based fluid? Surely this has some antiseptic properties (i.e. not very bacteria friendly?)

Just wondering...

Scarlet Fever

SF,

<alchahol>, How many have you had??

It is quite easy to remove the washer bottle (I think from memory years ago) as it is a slide fit. Just remove the pump which pulls out and lift the bottle out.

Not sure if the trim needs removing first but it is only held in by screws.
