MG MGF Technical - ABS Conversion

HI,

I have just bought some 304mm discs, 4 pot calipers, pads and hubs with ABS sensor and ABS ring attached.

My car does not have ABS and I could remove the sensor components before fitting, however does anyone know what else is required to convert the system to ABS and a rough idea of cost, probably sourcing second hand parts.

thanks
Chris Catchpole

Hi Chris,

It's a helluva job, I looked into it but decided it just wasn't worth the aggro. The ABS module mounts on the platform opposite the battery, so all the rigid pipes would have to be replaced. I estimated a couple of days just for that, and unless you have access to a pipe-flaring kit there's a fair amount of expense too! Running the cables from the 4 sensors isn't particularly straightforward either, plus changing the rear hubs... Adapting the wiring loom for the connections to the ECU & the instrument panel didn't look too tricky, but only after a lot of dismantling.

Having fitted braided hoses in place of the OE rubber items I found that the pedal is so direct that cadence braking becomes quite feasible, DIYABS if you like ;o)

Thanks Mike,

I thought it may be tricky.

I will remove the ABS parts from the hub and maybe someone may want to buy them. According to my EPC which is a few years old now, those ABS sensor cables cost over £100 each and the ABS hubs are over £40.

Not sure if they are items that are needed very often though.

ABS Sensors not often needed. Also they should be availabe for less then 100 quid per 4 pcs from second hand.

The costy problem is almost the other harness and the ABS modulator.
(Modualtor was at fleebay for 10 quid last week ... not sold.)

Anyway, hubs with or without ABS, complete with stub and bearing is useful to keeping yourself for later use.
If a front wheel bearing fails, you just need to swap in the whole assy.

A tempting way to go would be to exchange the rather old and slow original ABS system for a BOSCH ESP-ABS.
Yes,some work indeed. But at least all wheel sensors and plumbing is in place... IMO the most difficult thing would be to implement the steering sensor. A complete system + wiring and interconnections can be found in almost any modern car that is a write off due to shunting behind / side by another car.
Imagine a "F" where you could give full throttle in a slippery roundabout without being overtaken by yourself ;O) A winters job maybee....

Isn't the firmware vehicle specific Carl? i.e. you couldn't just fit a Bosch ESP-ABS unit from any vehicle to an MGF as the brake properties are going to be quite different from one vehicle to another- especially for a car like the F with it's mid-mounted engine?
