MG MGF Technical - ABS? Whine

Well after the UK weather the last week or so I have put the bike away for a while and started commuting in the F again.
Unfortunately this morning after driving for a few miles I heard a really loud whining sound from the front of the car. It sounds like gas escaping from a leaky valve! If I turn off the engine it sort of gradually dies away over a couple of seconds.
After restarting the car, it re-occured again after a short distance.
It seems to be coming from the front drivers side where the ABS unit is located - unfortunately when I stop to open the front bonnet, the noise stops, so I cannot be sure it is from the ABS unit.
I have no warning lights appearing, so anybody got any ideas?

Does the noise die away after you stop or after you turn the engine off? If it's after you turn the engine off you could go for a run, get the noise, pull over and undo the bonnet using the spare key. Then listen where the noise is coming from.

It isn't something trapped in the fresh air intake is it?

Or the radiator fan?

The ABS makes a sort of whirring noise and only then when the brake is applied.

Bruce,
Yes I will have to wait until tonight to get my spare key.
The noise only goes away when the engine is actually turned off.

Hi Jason,

could it bee a servo vacuum leak ? Check the connecting stiff black hose that goes to the servo system for any leaks. Also make sure that the brake-light switch is functioning OK. If stuck on it could possibly make the ABS pump motor run continously...

I read 'anywhere' about LHD MGF at older MGF, the black wiper cover may have bent the stiff black hose in a wrong direction. The LHD cover got changed at any time (MY2000) to give the hose more space.
This is not direct applicable at your RHD car, but a known fact. So if the hose at a LHD can be a trouble , I assume any bending to a RHD car can cause as well such problems.

ABS modulator noise would be more low frequent, more then a kind of rattle then a whine noise, IMO.

Thanks for the advice. I looked at the car last night and think it can only be the servo hose or a leaking radiator or hose. No sign of any coolant loss so it must be the servo hose.
But the noise did not occur last night or this morning, so perhaps it is alright again - MEMs is so adaptive it has rerouted the faulty servo connection!
More likely is that it was because the car has stood for so long and now it has been "warmed through" it is alright, at least I hope so.

Servo air vales do stick. Use and a couple of hot/cold cycles often gets some movement back into sticky parts.
