MG MGF Technical - Accelerator Feels awful

I have a P Reg MGF. The accelerator pedal has been getting wose and worse for the past 2 months or so.

It is now getting very stiff to press in , but in a jerky manner.

It feels and makes a sound like metal rubbing against metal...not right i'm sure!

Any idea what I can do to fix it.

Cheers

You could start by greasing the cable, but by now its probebly so far gone that a replacement is due before it snaps and leaves you stranded.
Will Munns

thanks will.

wheres the best place to get this done. will i be alright to chance a local garage or would you recommend an MG dealer?
Jimbo

Sounds like a problem with the throttle cable. Check the cable run from the front of the car to the throttle in the engine, and ensure that there are no sharp kinks in the cable. If there are, straighten out.

If nothing is obvious, then it may be the inner cable siezing in the outer sleave. Additional lubrication may help - or you may need a new cable :o(

D'oh - beaten to it!

There is nothing clever about the throttle cable a good local garge should have no trouble fitting you one.

Jimbo, Herts

Where in Herts? I'm in WGC and car is currently in Baldock @ Brown & Gammon. Any garage should be able to do it, there is a small 2-man band opposite my office who are quite handy (one of them runs a MX-5).

How handy are you? Get to Bike Stop in Stevenage Old Town and buy a cable oiler (about £6) and a can of cable lubricant (almost any silicon spray about £6) and spray down the cable until lube comes out the other end. If no dramatic improvement get a new cable fitted and then use the oiler to keep it 'as new'.

You could check around the throttle body to make sure that it is not binding on the "quadrant" (probably not real name but the bit where the cable fits around a quadrant).

Thanks guys..Im potters bar.

Reckon I'll nip it into a garage then.

I wouldnt know where to start squirting lubricant...not v mechanically minded!

Will I have to get a specific cable for the mgf, or is there a universal cable?
Jimbo

I would guess at the F cable being much longer than standard, a visit to your local MG/Rover dealer is in order.
Will Munns

Probably need a specific MGF/TF one, not that it is anything special, it's just that it is a long way from the accelerator pedal, around the footwell (under the carpet), along the cill (under the carpet), up behind the seat (under the carpet) onto the parcel shelf, into the engine bay and round the inlet plenum to the throttle body butterfly (can you tell i've replaced mine in the past?) ;-)

is it easy for a beginner at 'modding' to do diy
jimbo

Replacing the cable is easy, but getting access to the accelerator pedal mounting (you need to undo it) is a pain in the *rse due to it's location (at the top of the pedal box, high up in the footwell).

I did it myself because i needed to, but it's not a job i would like to do again.

On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 = low, 10 = high):

Mechanical skills required - 2 out of 10
Awkwardness of job - 7 out of 10

Next time i need one i'll probably get someone else to do it.
