MG MGF Technical - after a HGF
Hi all, My 1998 VVC (80.000 kms) had a HGF (like a lot of you, badly), now my garagiste is doing the reparation for changing the gasket but do you thing that i need to redo the head(clean the valves or other). Thanks for your reply see you soon on the bbs |

That all depends on how exactly the gasket went, was it a water leak or a serious overheating episode ? M. |

the head might need a skim, if so then the valves have to come out. Other than this, the days of decoking engines have long gone. Of course, as the head is off you might want to get someone to 'port' the head to squeeze a little more power oit of it. |

... depending on ... (RE: overheating episode) Let them check the excess length (spelling?) of the cylinder liners to the engine block. And at minimum for improvement, de-burr the coolant bores in the head. Vital in any way: Get the newest design gasket kit with steel dowels. Other bits: Change to uprated cam wheel bolts. MS *engine live safer kit* Change coolant pump as pre-caution. Over to the next. Regards Dieter |

Dave and I put together a "wish list" when his head gasket failed - and this is reproduced here: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/common_problems/hgf_pages/HGF_checklist.htm |

Rob, Item 4 on you list could do with a little modification. Its not specificly a "VVC Engine Life Saver kit". There is a Engine Life Saver kit for the VVC and a different cheaper kit for the 1.8i. But a very usful list none the less. |
