MG MGF Technical - Airbag

I have managed to aquire a new passenger airbag for my 2002 TF. When I look under the dash the wires are taped up ready to connect. However, when I plug them in the SRS light comes on on the dash. Anybody got any ideas?

Cheers

There is a lot more than just wires to control an airbag.

If the car did not have it fitted as new then it will almost certainly require a lot of re-programming of the on board computers and it might even need new ones.

Does the SRS light come on when the bags not connected?
If it only illuminates when you connect the new airbag I suspect the system is recognising a new component but not identifying it enough to employ it. Something along the lines of the SRS system saying "Ah something new here but I have no idea what it is"

It always *used* to be the case that (with an MGF) there were two types of control module and two different wiring looms availble.

If you had a single driver airbag you got the single airbag loom and control unit.
If you had a passenger one then you'd get the other two-bag version of the control unit and loom.

Assumpion: Your car was a single airbag car from new.

It *may* be the case the the wiring loom is now common but you still have a different control unit that can only cope with one airbag on the circuit.

I strongly suspect (but have no facts behind it at all) that all the control unit is doing is sensing the resistance of the circuit to check for airbag presence.

If this is roughly correct, then you'll need to get hold of a new dual-bag control unit.

Best check with your local friendly MGR parts department methinks.

I am not that familiar with the airbag system in general, and the system installed to your TF in particular. Remember that the TF received a new wiring loom and MFU at around the time your car made, so where advice applies to earlier Fs and TFs, it may not be the case for you. The presence of the wiring loom in your car may be an example of this: earlier cars with only one airbag would not have the loom present behind the airbag blank (?)

Perhaps a trip to a dealer or a specialist with access to Testbook could help? The SRS ECU may need 'telling' that it now has a passenger airbag attached?

Would be very interested to hear how you get on with this KB.

Yes, very interested to see what happens.

Especially if there's an easy way to disable the passenger airbag with the possibly new control module. :-)

The common response to this Thread is that the SRS is not a DIY System.
The system requires to be set up by someone suitably trained in the technology with a final check using Testbook.
The risk of DIY is that an Airbag may inflate at any time or at "70" in the outside lane on a congested motorway. It is then progammed to deflate leaving you with no protection and probably no Insurance.

Parts catalogue most mysteric regarding the harness, as usual.

There are only two different SRS ECU's since AD021170 (early 1997). Nothing about a change in MY2000 or later with the ECU.
