MG MGF Technical - Alarm remote signal overpowered by Cell phone rela

Today I parked my MGF and the alarm remote won't activate the door locks. I locked the door using the key. On return remote would not deactivate the immobliser. I notice a cellphone relay station about 50m away. Eventually towed car out of area and everthing worked fine. Is this a common problem and what is the best way to shield the immoblisher receiver unit from these external strong signals?
K Stansfield

It's not unknown over here in UK. Some areas of motorway have been reported as causing havoc with car electronics.

re immobiliser - make a note of the EAC for your car, test it to ensure it works, then use the key to override the immobiliser next time.

Thanks John
I bought the car from 2nd hand dealer and I was not supplied with any override code , how do i go about sourcing the code?
K Stansfield

You will need to go to an MG Rover dealer. Presume that like most NZ MGF's it is a Japanese import which may involve a bit more checking as it won't be on the register of cars sold new in NZ. They may also charge you!
Mike

Thanks Mike
Yes it was a Jap import. Which is the best Rover dealer in the Auckland area or is there only one?
K Stansfield

K (Kellie?), I use Newmarket European for my TF. I don't know what Roverland is like.

When I had the F it was serviced a couple of times by Terry Kelk, at Heratage Mechanical Services, Henderson. Terry is a top bloke, and knows his stuff. He is an ex-MGR mechanic and was working on a fix for the alarm fob problems with the MG Rover person that designed the alarm system, but since the demise of MGR UK I do not know where he got to with it. Give him a call 09 838-2100.

Hi There This is a major problem in New Zealand with Japanese imported F's and is getting worse. Just about the whole of Wellington City is a no work area.

One solution, which does work and comes from Terry Kelk (who is extremely approachable) carry a large piece of aluminium foil with you in the car.

Check before locking car - get your haed down into the passenger foot well and shielding the fob with the foil, making sure you are close to the footwell light, lock the car with the fob. If it works then unlock with fob. Lock door with key - on return unlock door with key. get out your foil and "head down and ar*e up like a lizard drinking" fob it into action.

Iam quietly waiting for any developments which will solve the problem - it is a bloody nuisance.

Just as a point of interest - I am sourcing an alarm system for the coling system. Ford XR8 have one- looking into this and a few other options which might work for us instead of the cost of imports.

Will keep you posted

If you do visit Terry you will have a cup of coffee in your hand before he even gets around to asking what he can do for you. :-)
