MG MGF Technical - Alarm & cannot start car

My drivers side central locking stopped working. I tried it on the passenger side to see if it was the wiring. When I put it back on the drivers side the central locking would not work on either side. I cannot start the car as the immobliser kicks in. I have tried to reset the key fobs but no success. I have tried using the key to deacivate the alaram using the special sequence but again no success. How do I over-ride the immobliser so at least I can drive the car. Also any ideas what is broken.

P.S. I have tried all the fuses but all are OK.

Been there, had similar. Don't quite understand your comment about trying it on different sides of the car as there is only one receiver for the keyfob remote transmitter (blipper), the aerial wire is behind the trim in the lefthand footwell. The obvious first step is to renew the blipper's battery, and re-sync afterwards by activating the blipper at least 3 times. A decent alarm specialist will almost certainly fix the problem cheaper than a Rover dealer....

You said "Don't quite understand your comment about trying it on different sides of the car as there is only one receiver" I tried the central locking on the drivers side on the passenger side. There are two of these to lock the doors.

Rephaseing (because it still isn't very clear) you unplugged the lock mech from the drivers side and moved it over to the passanger side where you plugged it onto the loom where the passanger side mech would fit. (is this right?)
If it is right then the wireing dia (http://www.mgfcar.de/schedules/) says that the wires are the same (ie you won't have broken anything extra by putting it in the passanger side- it would have shown any wireing faults to the drivers door, but nothing else.
It suprises me that this is possible, I would have thought that MGR could have saved a bit of money by not including all the wires on the pasanger side.

...or do you mean you used the key in the lock? (Just unlocking the car with the key doesn't unset the immobiliser, you have to use the blipper). If you have two blippers, they are not related to each door.
David

but the car only has one lock, so he can't mean this!

Some owners found their immobiliser deactivate sequence was wrong- I think it was add one to the second digit to correct. Your dealer should be able to confirm.

Sorry, cannot remember exactly where but there is an archive thread about the error imobiliser deactivation keys and which digit needs changing in which direction.

Would look it up but users are yelling that our email server may have crashed.

Try unlocking the car with the key, turn on the ignition and when the immobiliser beeps at you, press the alarm button. Hopefully this will switch it off.

There is a note somewhere, possibly Dieter's site that will enable you to work out the correct key immobiliser deactivation code from the code you have, though I can't remember where it is at the moment!

right?"

Yes this is right.

I have tried turning the key and pressing the key rob but still nothing. It is rather bizarre. The Alarm does not show the flashing red light either. I have tried the manuall over ride as per Hand Book, with the key but this did not work.
Steve Kemp

>The Alarm does not show the flashing red light either.
Does it show any light?
If yes- it's always on then the system thinks the door is open
If no- then it could be the alarm ECU gone west, but before we go there...
you said you've check all fuses, did you check the ones under the bonnet?
Have you checked that the cars battery is good(can cause alarm faults if low)?
when you put the key in do you get the buzzer noise?
Have you done anything to the car recently? (changed stereo etc.)

1. Alarm does not show any light.
2. Where are the fuses under the bonnet?
3. Battery fully charged
4. I do get a buzzer noise when I put the key in
5. No changes only tried the door module on the passenger side.
Steve Kemp

The second fusebox is under the bonnet on the right hand side (looking into the bonnet)

gives you the internals - oh and theres a fuse for the alarm, I guess you might want to check this ;-)

This sounds familiar to my recent problem and it ended up costing me £240 – the dealer traced it to an electrical fault in the door – I’m not convinced they have fixed the problem because I had to override the immobiliser the other day – if the horn sounds the code is wrong and you may need to increment the 2nd and 4th numbers by 1 – get it wrong three times and you get you cannot try again for 10 minutes. Hope this helps…. Good luck…

What ae they yelling? - "Leave it down so that we can do some work?" :-)
Gary Sone

Found the problem. It was the fuse under the bonnet and I thought there was only one fuse box. I have ordered a new driver side central locking switch. So I am happy. Was worried about sweet talking dealer emptying my pockets of money.

Thanks eveyone who helped.

They may wish - but how can I get on this BBS if they keep shouting. Told them it would be a couple of hours and had some time to myself. Users seem to think IT is for their benefit!

Steve,
Glad to be of service - how old is the car?
