MG MGF Technical - Alternater Belt

I am in the process of trying to replace the alternater belt on my MGF. Unfortunately after taking the wheel off and getting to the belt, I cannot physically see how to remove the belt, to replace it???

On the first wheel that the belt is attached to there is a bolt through the middle, does this need unscrewing??? do I have to remove the cog/wheel to remove the old belt??

Any help at all would be appreciated as I'm really struggling!!

Cheers, Andy

The alternator is held by two big bolts (13mm) and one adjustment bolt (8mm). If you look at the alternator the top bolt(13) is the hinge and the bottom bolt (13) runs in a channel. if you follow the channel away from the engine, then on the far end, where it is folded over, there is the 8mm adjusrtment bolt.

Firstly get an 8mm spanner and losten up the 8mm bolt so it sticks out by a good 10mm,

Now take two 13mm spanners and losten (but dont remove!) the other two bolts (you will need the other spanner to hold the other end of the bolt). give youself at laest 1mm slack in the top bolt.

the alternator may move now, but it should be very stiff, using a piece of wood as a drift, as close to the hinge as possible give the alternator a few swift hard taps, it should now be free to move.

Remove belt,
replace belt,

now using the 8mm bolt tighten the belt, tighten till you can turn the belt over 90 degrees with moderate thumb pressure (I know - Mr vague, but short of special measuring devices this has been the advice for the last 50 years at least)

Now tighten the 13 mm bolts.

Job done!

Cheers Will, thanks for the help, do u know of anywhere that has a diagram just so it makes it a lot easier?? as I am a complete novice and dont wanna be unscrewing the wrong bolts.....Sorry for being a pain in the ar*e, but last night I could only see one bolt, although it was dark and pissing down at the time!

I need to get this done tonite, and need to know exactly which bolts to unscrew............. or should it be pretty obvious?

Cheers, Andy
