MG MGF Technical - Alternator brachet snapped
Shortly after my last service I started experiencing a distinct rattle behind the drivers' seat when in low revs of up to 2500rpm. this continued for about two months and then was replaced by a squeeling alternator belt. I presumed it just needed adjusting, imagine my horror in seeing the below! (pic) I have no idea what coud have caused this or what the best way of fixing it may be/where I can source a replacement part. |

From the pictures, rust on the fracture face suggests that the fracture has progressed for some time. A close up of the face may show if it is due to a material defect or fatigue. From Dieter's EPC. Alternator Link YLX100140 and Belt PQS100840. £5.64 and £9.40 from B&G www.ukmgparts.co.uk Geoff F. |

From the look of the picture the crack has started where the metal has been bent to form a channel so most likely it started at some stress raising defect where it was bent and has been propagating for some time as Geoff mentions. This type of failure is often helped along by rust forming in the crack, expanding, and increasing the stress level at the end of the crack. |

Thanks. I have received the part, taken off the wheel and protective cover got the two hardest bolts off but cannot shift the bolt closest to the wheel, as it has already been rounded. I have admitted defeat and taking it to the garage monday. |
