MG MGF Technical - Another HGF? :-(

Further to my 'Burning smell - coolant problem?' I took my car to my dealer today. They tested the coolant cap and it was not faulty and they suspect a HGF :-( They think that there must be a build up of pressure somewhere in the engine causing the venting of coolant and thus the smell and deposits around the coolant reservoir. What is the prognosis??

The coolant level was OK, no engine overheating, and the oil looks OK. Could it be anything but HGF. All a bit annoying as I get my car serviced at the dealers and it has only done 42,000.

Anthony, try an MoT exhaust gas 'sniffer' in the expansion tank after removing the cap. If there are any signs of HCs/CO etc, then the garage's diagnosis is probably correct... But how did they test the cap without a pressure rig?

If your car pre or post may 2000?

If its pre than you have done jolly well to get 42,000 miles. We know of an Lotus Elise owner who got less than 50 miles!

I doubt the Elise was engine failure, the doors probably fell off at 50 miles !!

.the other thing they tend to do Steve is leave the road without much warning!

Pity you don't leave these threads as easily Smegma!

They attached the coolant cap to a pressure tester. Am in the US at the moment. Apparently the 'good news' from home is that they have stripped off the cylinder head and sent it for assessment........
