MG MGF Technical - Another MOT out of the way... but....

...they came up with an advisory that I've not read anything about over the years.

It's a 2001 VVC and the advisory reads, for both nearside and offside:

Outer sill seatbelt anchorge prescribed area is corroded but not considered excessive.

Anybody come across this previously and if there is a remedy had it put right?

BTW - also had to have a new exhaust, x4 new tyres (managed to get 215/40/16 GY Eagle F1 GSD2's for £69 each at Kwickfit if anybody is looking), & front n/s & o/s track rod ends replaced. All in all a pretty pricey day!

For a 2001 car to be showing enough corrosion to be an advisory is I think unusual, perhaps yours has seen more salt/damp/mud than the average.

'not considered excessive' sounds like there is heavy corrosion, but the metal still feels firm when tapped, i.e. perforation is minimal so the strength hasn't been compromised significantly. If you were to strip off the rust with a wire brush, treat it with anti-rust compound, skim with filler and then re-paint, you might get a few more years before it becomes a failure. In reality, grinding out that area, cutting & bending a repair patch and then welding it in only takes a little more time, but will last years longer.

The 'proper' remedy would be to replace the complete outer sill panels. The cost is significantly higher, in both panel costs & labour, but then it'll be good for another 10 years in the same conditions.

Cheers Bandit, thought that might be the case.

Bit frustrated really, didn't buy a TF as I think they've no character so thought the next best thing would be a 2001 'F - live and learn.

A job for the nice long summer evenings I think....

Graham Elleray

Funny how when nice long summer evenings come along, the maintenance schedule dematerialises..... This past couple of months seems to have been an endless procession of tasks much more suited to warm days and sunlight.

Thanks for the useful tip on the GSD2 availability BTW, I don't usually include Kwik Fit in my trawl for Goodyear tyres. Moved a hibernating F 100yds in the dark without noticing the almost flat tyre, and that's trashed the sidewall. Seeing a tyre with 6mm of nice even tread go on the scrap pile hurts 8-(

Did you have the alignment checked after the track rod ends were replaced? They come in a variety of overall lengths, so putting the new ones into the same position on the steering arm doesn't necessarily ensure the geometry ends up the same. Many a munched tyre has resulted from that little detail...

Agreed on the Kwick Fit front - never thought I'd be buying set of F1's from them. Funny thing is though - they were delivered to the store by Micheldever???

Not sure if it's just me but they seem far more comfortable to drive on than the H'cook Evo's I've had fitted previously. Guess it must be the fact they're not XL tyres and the side walls are a bit more 'squishy', well pleased.

Yes they sorted the tracking - think it was out anyway from when I had the Hydragas pumped back up to the factory standard.

Going to be sunny in the North tomorrow so it's jacket & heaters on - roof down - and a run up the the Trough of Bowland for me.

Happy Days - soon forget about the mid-week wallet emptying!
