MG MGF Technical - Another possible HGF
Sorry its another post about this folks, but I'd appreciate any advice you can offer. I've read through a few older posts on the subject and I don't hold out much hope..... Anyway, got a call from the missus today at tea time saying she was stuck in traffic on an A-road and that there was smoke coming from the back. What should she do? Straight away I got her to look at the engine temp and told her to get off the road and switch off until I got there. On inspection, there was no water in the expansion tank. She insists the temp didn't go into the red, being between the last dot and the red itself. I gave it some water and started up. We've drove the 2 miles back home without it overheating and without it losing any more water. The radiator came on fine too when I left it on the driveway. I'm not sure about contamination yet as its still a little too hot. What irritates is that it had a replacement cylinder head after a previous failure in February last year, about 11k ago. This was ddone at a Rover main dealer (Horners in Manchester). I'm not sure if I have any recourse but surely a main dealer replacement 18 months and 11k shouldn't be a problem? Anyone got any soothing words? |

It may not be as bad as it seems, if there is no oil contamination refill the coolant system making sure its properly bleed and buy a new coolant filler cap and then take the car to be pressure tested. |

Had the same thing recently but no mayo. Coolant loss traced to a hole in the engine inlet hose caused by chaffing against the clutch slave cylinder mounting bracket. It's quite difficult to spot. I started a thread about this, search for 'engine inlet hose'. Rob Bell may have some photos on his site. |

Buy a coolant level warning system. Invaluable on the MGF. A piercing bleep in your left ear will soon make you pull over. |

"Coolant loss traced to a hole in the engine inlet hose caused by chaffing against the clutch slave cylinder mounting bracket. It's quite difficult to spot. I started a thread about this, search for 'engine inlet hose'." I noticed this recently when doing my cam belt, and put a spare S/S hose clip around the hose to rub on the bracket. A bit more thought and this could have been eliminated - like a lot of other things!! |

I had a look at Rob's site but couldn't find them. Take a look at www.mynos.co.uk you can save the images to your PC and see them at a sensible resolution. |
