MG MGF Technical - Another urgent problem - wipers

Hi again all,

Only urgent as the car is on ebay right now trying to be sold :-)

On the way home tonight realised I have developed another problem.

My wipers don't work on single wipe (pull the stalk down) or on full (double) speed. They work on intermittent and normal (single) speed ok.

Any ideas?

I think I need to mention here that I had the stereo out at lunch and looking at the top of the heater controls - It looks like I've managed to snap one of the PCBs thats attached to the top-back of the heater control unit - I'm guessing I must have done this while doing the dash work the other day. Now the heater controls themselves are all working fine but I think the lighting for them isn't.

Would this cause a bad earth and these problems (including my lack of high level brake light) to appear?

Anyone got a pic of the top of an MY2000 heater control unit so I can point out what I mean?... I've had a look on sfforever and mgfcar.de but they're both pre-MY2000 pics and don't look the same.

Cheers

Is this Velma's way of saying "I don't want to be sold" ??

Can't think how the illumination for the heater control could impact on either the brake light or the wipers. The pull down position I believe uses the same circuit as the double speed, so that could just be one loose wire.

Mike,

I think you might be right about her telling me she doesn't want to be sold :-) She's just got her first eBay bid as well.. altho not near my reserve yet...

I did have the steering column off as well while I was doing the dash stuff so maybe I dislodged the wire.. I'll take it off again and have a root around in the morning.

Cheers

Mike,

Very strange... but about a couple of hours ago I went down the chinese to get a takeaway and the wipers were fine again... cars... who'd have 'em.. :-)

Your dashboard antics will not have affected the centre brake light if the other 2 are working.
The wire to the brake lights (green-purple) is spliced to feed the boot lid harness branch which has a two pin connector for the light. The earth is a black wire in the harness to a connector in the engine bay. You most likely have the dreaded broken wire in the left hand hinge harness loop. The 7 wires here are in a split convoluted tube wrapped with teflon tape.
Disconnect the battery, carefully unwrap the tape and the wires are accessible. I have used a 2mm crimp sleeve and heat shrink tube. The Tie Wraps on the hinge arm are MGR Part No. YQR100750

I have had windscreen wiper problems in the pass but normally when I flick the switch, if I put it to a setting no problems at all. The windscreens wipers used to not wipe, stop half way through a cycle all sorts of weid things.

No problems for years touch wood.

I did think about changing something like the stalk but decided it was to much agro and as long as I only use a setting no problems.

Water can get into the motor housing and cause unusual behavour. Chris' problems sound switch related though.
