MG MGF Technical - ANTI-FREEZE
*** EXTRACTED FROM RADIO RECEPTION THREAD *** How can I check that the anti-freeze in my 1996 MGF is of the correct mix for adequate frost protection. The coolant is yellow/green in colour and I believe it to be the Unipart Superplus? Nev |

every two years you can take it to the rover dealer who will drain it out and fill it back up as part of the service ;-) More seriously you would have to add a _LOT_ of water in order to dilute the antifreeze to anywhere near the point where it could freeze up in a british winter. If you remain worried then you can get a specific gravity device which consists of three balls in a tube, suck in coolant and two or three of the balls will float, job done correct level. |

I think I've seen one of these testers in the Anne Summers shop! Sam |

Thanks Will, I tried a specific gravity device, but all the indicator balls sank. I perhaps assumed wrongly that the MGF antifreeze is a special mix which would not register on a standard tester? Nev |

Nev, I don't think there is anything cleaver about the F's antifreeze, is there any reason you should expect it to be over-dilute? |
Will Munns |
Nev/Will, I thought that there are a couple of different types of antifreeze used in Fs. Do the newer cars not have a greater interval between changes. Will the tester work with both kinds? |

Hi Will, It was just a routine check and I was puzzled that I didn’t get a reading on the tester. If this shows that the antifreeze mix is too week, do I just add more neat antifreeze? Nev |

>>Do the newer cars not have a greater interval between changes.<< That's right David: the OAT coolant has a much longer service interval. Reduces the chances of a grease monkey messing up the bleed procedure! ;o) Nev - if the antifreeze needs topping up, then adding neat antifreeze is exactly the right thing to do :o) Having a low antifreeze content in an alloy engine is especially bad, as the antifreeze also contains corrosion inhibitors. Too little and serious engine damage can occur in the long term. |
