MG MGF Technical - Anyone Changed Front Wheel Bearings?
Hi I Have a '96 VVC with an impossible to trace grinding graunching sound from somewhere at the front. It sounds just like brake pads starting to wear down to the metal and catching on the discs (I have fitted new discs and pads, same noise afterwards) There is no play in the wheelbearing but I am planning on replacing them or inspecting them out of desperation ! Has anyone done this job? Are the bearings "pressed" in putting it out of my "home mechanic" reach? Can I even get to them to add a little grease or something or are they completely sealed? Thanks for any advice! Rico |

Or does anyone maybe have a workshop manual they could quote me from? Is it say beyond a "weekend mechanic" according to the manual? If anyone has an info that would be great, I'd like to tackle the job this "weekend" in my "weekend" mechanic role :o) Thankee Rico |

INCREDIBLE !! The horrible metal on metal grainy grinding sound was coming from the n/s/f RUBBER tyre ! I can't believe it myself but someone suggested "tyres" no way I thought, but out of sheer desperation I put both front wheels on the rear and rears on front (I know they're are different sizes) A horrible grinding sound appeared from the n/s/r under braking and slow cornering !! I put the spare on the n/s/r and everything is silent. Hard to believe, but I assure you it is true. How on Earth ? |

Cool! Problem solved! :o) Tp try and answer your original question... I believe (but have never tried!) that the bearings are the same (very similar) to Metro ones. In which case they can quite easily be replaced at home. It is a bit of a faff, but I have done it. Cheers. Paul |

Did you have to replace your wheel bearings after the Castle Coomb incident Paul? Is all fixed now? With big brakes? :o) Tell all! |

Hi Rob, Nope. No damage to anything other than the brakes and possibly some seat damage. Brakes are on order from HiSpec and will be fitted as soon as they arrive!! Gotta decide what pads to use with it... Hmmm... full choice of Mintex range and others too! Want to keep the balance with the rears which are still 1177s. Tricky. P. |
