MG MGF Technical - Anyone fitted new shocks lately?

Hi
Have just investigated a knoking on my 6 year okd F. Have discovered that the shock absorber end has been knoking with the rubber stopper loose in the shock absorber end.
I would like to up grade shocks to adjustables and would like to know if anyone has any advice on which ones would suit the accasional track day.

regards

I went for AVOs, they're bottom adjustables for easy access with 22 positions for good track day set up. Give 'Motobuild Racing' a call, they do Koni, GAZ and AVO's, Gaz being a little cheaper. There number is 0208 893 4553 or 0208 8942233.

There's also the Tech-Speed Motorsport suspension package (with Bilstein shocks) which everyone I've spoken to has said good things about... hope it's as good as they say as my car is booked in for the job at the end of the month :)

Hi Jonathan,

The Tech-Speed'd cars always seem to be able to carry a lot of speed through the corners on track days, and the fillings of the drivers seem fairly intact so it seems they've got the formula right, however the Bilsteins are factory-set to Techspeed's secret spec so no potential for doing your own experimenting.

A set of GAZ have been performing well on my car, I believe they're a KONI design without the price premium, and the AVO dampers seem to be equally well thought of. The benefits aren't just for track days, the standard shocks are pretty feeble and virtually any gas shock will make the car feel much more 'planted' on uneven surfaces.

There's LEDA suspension to consider, great motorsport pedigree and certainly built to last, but they make the price of the TechSpeed Bilsteins look cheap...

You could consider the four-nipple job too - the guys from VHS confirmed that this was how they wanted the Trophy spec to be, but production line restrictions meant it had to be moderated to different flow restrictors instead.

Yellow Koniīs for me ! Easy adjustment from above thru open rear or front hatch.A bit on the expensive side in UK I guess, BUT a very different price if bought when doing a trip to the continent...
841 1218SPORT front and 8041 1219SPORT rear.
Together with a "nipple job" it really transforms the car both on road and track ! / Carl.

If you want the best adjustables, then Ohlins are the ones to go for. But they aren't cheap (note a degree of understatement).

I have the Bilsteins (Tech-speed) and am absolutely delighted with them, and have never felt the need to mess with settings.

I wonder how many people with adjustables actually adjust once an adequate compromise has been found?

Frankly, I am concentrating on trying to learn how to drive and achieve consistency. Another variable isn't going to help...

Hi Rob,
dissagree slightly...You see it from a pure racing point. I use different settings for track, slalom and "normal" road use. But once found to be OK these 3 diff. settings doesnīt vary from time to time as long as I donīt change tires or hydragas pressure. / Carl.

I had issues with the shocks on my 1995 f and went for the GAZ ones from MGF Centre and they are good with the adjuster on the side of the bottom strut....easy access for track days etc, have been on car for 4 months i think now and took a bit of adjusting to get them right but are vvv good value for money as they are on the lower end of the expense scale!!! Would recommend them.
