MG MGF Technical - Anyone tried GT Radial Champiro tyres?

Just bought my S reg 1.8i MGF (hooray!) - next day the heavens opened (Boo!).

Wondered if anyone had any experience of GT Radial Champiro tyres? When I went to view my F, it had Goodyear NCT3s all round. Vendor promised to replace the one with below legal tread before I bought it - which he has, but with a Champiro 205/50.

The other tyres are OK (3-4mm tread) but would probably benefit from replacement. Could just fit 4 new ones all round, but seems a shame to chuck out a new tyre, so was thinking of getting another three to match, but would like to know if anyone has any experience of them on an MGF?

Had a look through the BBS archive and only found one passing reference - have also read the guide on the ultimate MG website so I have some idea what the other choices are.

Thanks,

Mark

Did he change just 1 tyre???????
I thought this was NOT allowed, as it should be the same tyre (make and type) on 1 axle.
Back to the original question, no never heard of it. Let him put a pair of Toyo Proxes on, as these are quiet good (IMO).

Johan, the only legal stipulations are regarding the fitment of radial and cross plies on the same axle. Otherwise, it is perfectly acceptable (legally) to have 4 different brands on each of the wheels.

But this, as we know, is very bad practice. The MGFs handling is very sensitive to tyre choice: hence the buyers guide on the website you mentioned.

Personally if I were you Mark, if you can afford it, replace all four tyres. The Toyos that Johan recommends have an excellent reputation for cost/performance. Or go for MG favoured tyres - the Goodyear F1 GS-D2s...

Thanks Rob and Johan - knew different makes on the same axle wasn't good practice, but thought I'd ask the question about the Champiros before rushing out to change them. Will probably bite the bullet and fit new ones all round. Time for a run down to Micheldever and let them check the tracking out as well!

Have just checked the ride height as well, and found it a bit low at approx 335 mm, so that's another thing to add to the list....

Has anyone had any experience or thoughts on the Dunlop SP Sport tyre? Only curiosity is asking at mo!

Cheers,
Duncan.

I well remember using the original Dunlop SP Sport tyre (the "Aquajet" radial) on my Cooper 'S' - fantastic tyres for the time, they stuck to the road like sh1t to a hairy blanket !! - the down-side was that they only lasted 3-4 thousand miles on the front. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately, considering the cost of frequent replacements) they are no longer generally available

Mark, Micheldever only check the front wheel tracking unless you've booked a full 4-wheel track in advance :o( Got caught out with this before...

Duncan, not tried those tyres... Good luck for your first sprint! Unfortunately, I'll still be on the continent so will miss your debut! :o(

Cheers Rob!
Alas though my debut will be more than likely Castle Coombe due to money needed to be spent on taking the head off to replace 2 valves! Complicated story that I will tell you when I see you next!

Cheers,
Duncan.

Ouch, that's a shame :o(

See you at Castle Combe then! :o)
