MG MGF Technical - AP Calipers on Square Spoke Alloys
Hi All, I know there is a lot of information in the archives and on various websites on brake upgrades because I have read so much information my eyes are bleeding! However, there seems to be no definitive information as to whether the AP Calipers and the 304mm discs will fit under the 16" Square Spoke alloys as fitted to the MK2 VVC. Does anyone know for sure? I have read about the need for spacers so please can anyone give me the smallest width I can get away with because I have seen references to 4mm, 6mm & 10mm? If I do need them does anyone know where I might get some from and do I need both front and back spaced to the same amount or do I just do the fronts? Thanks in advance, Nick |

From memory, (It's in the archives) spacers would need to be about 17mm to provide enough clearance with that rims on big brakes. So the wheel thread studs need to be changed also to 17mm longer measures. |

17mm seems like an awful lot! Eeek! That much sounds like it would scrape the wheel arches and what effect would 17mm have on the handling? I have searched the archives extensively and not found any definitive info on this. Has anyone who has actually done it got any useful info and exact measurements they would like to impart? Cheers! :) |

Nick, http://www2.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&mode=archiveth&subject=69&subjectar=69&thread=2007022118260710449 The guy who tried it was Mr Joerg Kirch/Germany. (Ex Rover (DE) technician) Bend wheel house lead, add longer studs. Anyway, if I were you, I'd change to the wider TF rims. Did the same, btw. |

I've just had a total blast at the MGsOnTrack day at Silverstone, and my Mike Satur big brake kit was totally brilliant. That's 280mm front discs, front and rear drilled and grooved Black Diamond with Mintex 1144 pads. These will fit any of the wheels as far as I know. My 16" Cup wheels won't allow 304s with AP calipers. I know these look the business, so I was slightly disappointed not to be able to use them at the time, but having experienced how the MS kit works in anger, I can't imagine they would have been any better. They're probably lighter as well which is another plus point on the handling front. On the track I could mash the pedal very deep into the braking zone - much later than many of the others I was following. I only once locked up when I got the approach to Vale a bit too fast! They seemed very happy working hard, no funny smells anyway although Silverstone gives them plenty of time to cool off a bit between the big braking points. On the road there's been a tendency for one brake to squeal unless I'm very light or unnecessarily heavy on the pedal, but perhaps after Monday they're now fully bedded in and won't. Anyway, I can recommend them 100%. |
