MG MGF Technical - Battery troubles

Hi all,

VVC 96P

Whilst taking out my battery to recharge it <sigh> I noticed that the compartment looks as if it's designed to hold a bigger sized battery. As I suspect mine's the original, and is probably now due for a replacement, can someone recommend what I should replace it with. Bearing in mind its only used at weekends, and not every weekend at that. It's losing its charge after only a couple of days now :o(

Also, while I think of it, could someone tell me what should the draw on a static MGF be, with/without alarm and how long to leave it to allow engine management to switch off.

Thanks, Matt.
Matt

The bigger battery is designed for cars with EPAS, those without it can use the smaller size without a problem.....

True, but if you are having battery drain problems (maybe the car is left stationary for long periods), then you can fit the larger battery to a non-EPAS F (Scarlet is non-EPAS and (now) has the larger battery).

IMO it's an option worth thinking about anyway.

"VVC 96P" - therefore it will have EPAS and should have the bigger battery.

True too....

I have the larger battery fitted to my non-EPAS car....

Just one piece of advice.... Get yourself a sealed battery. I have a Halfrauds unsealed one which has a little overflow pipe on it. This little pipe just spits out hot acid and ruins the paintwork inside the bonnet. I've now fitted a little piece of hose to this to drain it safely.

Andy, Shouldn't you be thinking of leaving now if you're coming to the colpuc.....!?

Well spotted Tim.... I missed that

Me too (missed the VVC 96P)

Doesn't look like i'm gonna make the CoLPUC tonight afterall - still at work... :-(

Matt,

My comments from a previous thread taken from the archives:-

System at 12.5 volts. Car left overnight.
With alarm off and car unlocked drain was 0.032A
With alarm on drain was 0.067A

The MEMS relay holds in after switch off for approximately 9 mins (560 secs) but if the car is stone cold it switches off almost immediately.

So after switching off a warmed engine the drain was 0.13A for about 9 mins and then fell to 0.067A.

The results with the 'alarm on' may be slightly different for other cars because my volumetric alarm is home made (Jap imports have no VA fitted). I wouldn't have thought there will be much difference though.

Hope this is what you wanted

My VVC with EPAS and Aircon came with the larger of the two batteries -larger as in capacity - I belive both the standard batteries are nearly the same size - both smaller than the battery tray in the F.
When I bought a replacement I found some replacement batteries in the same capacity were of the physically larger size (hence the need for the larger battery tray) but what I was able to do was fit a much larger capacity battery which filled the tray.
