MG MGF Technical - Bearing question

Had my F diagnosed with a front wheel bearing on it's way out - whirring noise that increases with speed - I've been recommended to have both sides done and I know this is generally the thing to do but is it absolutely essential if the other side doesn't show obvious signs of wear?
PJ Sapwell

I wouldn't have thought so. I'm not a mechanic though. I also wouldn't have thought there would be any advantage / cost saving over doing both at the same time rather than 1 now and 1 later if required.
Leigh Reid

I've never heard of any advice to replace in pairs. On the F it is typically the rear nearside that goes. I've had several done on my F over the years by Techspeed Motorsport, a respected race-prep outfit, and never been advised to do more than replace the single faulty bearing.

I'd agree, and don't fix what ain't broken.
Dieter

and here.

The LHS gets much more load with rounderbouts taken at speed, so it will fail first, depending on how balanced your journey is depends on how far behind the RHS will be

There are more clockwise circuits too Will ;-)

Thanks people - I think I've got my answer!

I have always replaced wheel bearings in pairs, just habit really.
