MG MGF Technical - best performance exhaust?

The baffles on my Miltek performance exhaust have packed up and it looks like an MOT failure and more importantly a noise test failure when I go sprinting etc. What is the current most favoured exhaust? I am particularly keen on the best in terms of performance. Don't much care what it sounds like or (within reason) what it costs.

Hi!

Are you certain it is the baffles. Has an Exhaust
cente put a stethascope on the box to identify the
rattle?

I had a similar problem, the Exhaust Co. I used
could find nothing wrong, but when I drove my car
it still sounded like a whole load of washers rattling
about in the back of the car.

Turned out it was the holding bracket to the relief
oil filler cap and dipstick that had broken causing
a hell of a lot of viabration. Took the bracket off
and used coat hanger wire to harness the filler cap
unit to the engine block and have had no trouble since. Will try and re-use the bracket one day
if I can work out how to re-fix the bolt - heat resistant glue/stuff didn't work.

Hope your problem is as cheap as that.

I have been told that the Miltek doesn't contain any baffles - this is from a chap who used to make them. However i feel it is simply a missuse of the terminology.

Anyway, there is a picture of the inside of a Miltek/SP exhaust on Rob Bell's website, this will give some idea of the construction and possibly the potential problem. As you will see from the picture, the inside is a series of perforated, disjointed pipes providing no direct route out for the exhaust gases, and thus slowing them down enough to silence them.

From a performance perspective, under no circumstances believe the claims made by any manufacturer or seller for the performance of thier system. We have yet to independantly test all the current systems out there, but can tell you that the old design of Mike Satur Daytona came top in the last batch of tests we did with a gain of +5bhp. The Miltek came second with +4.5bhp (despite SP's +13bhp claimed gain). The Phoenix has yet to be tested, but feels good on my F and contributes to Scarlet's +30bhp over standard (ITG Maxogen, Trophy TB, VVC inlet plenum and manifold, MS Stage 1 head, Janspeed 4:2:1 manifold, cat bypass and Phoneix). Break that lot down into elements and +5bhp sounds about right for this system too.

Hope this helps

I guess you could say that the Milltek has two baffle plates to divide the silencer box into three compartments. The Mike Satur Daytona on my car is the same (I gather that this system was actually made by Milltek, I guess that may not be surprising).

Check for other sources of rattles first Marc - it could be the bracket as Bill says, or even the catalyst matrix breaking up.

As for the best - I suspect that a straight through system will work best - and I know a very nice man called Dave at Powerspeed who'll make a re-packable system for very reasonable money. Dave Livingstone has one of these on his car... :o)

Marc,
Unless you have one made (cost and bhp. gain) you could go by price as all the major players seem to have a similar bhp. gain, whether claimed or actual.

Brown and Gammons, Mike Satur, MG Owners Club and Blue Flame all produce a similar good quality s/steel system, prices range from £255 for the MGOC Super Sports through to about £300.

Blue Flame pop up on E Bay, you could pick one up for mid £200's if you are lucky, they do a buy it now price, just keep an eye out.

Check the up to date web sites of B&G and MS for current deals and prices, you may be lucky.

Check what you are getting, you may be able to pick up a de-cat pipe, if you want one, should give a bit better breathing and will give a different sound.

its roy at techspeed who reckon the exhaust has had it and he should know.I might just see if milltek still sell the sp - better the devil you know and all! If not I'll take a look at B&G and MS sites.

Yes, Milltek still sell the Supersports (as it is called).

Actually, IIRC, Milltek used to advertise the system with a life time guarantee. If you are the orignal owner of this system, it might be worth asking about?

Hi Marc

If you make me a sensible offer you can have my SP exhaust. It is just over one year old. You can call me in the evenings on 07900 172032

My X-Power Janspeed (just over 12 months old) is sat in it's box in the garage, while I try to find a carrier who will take it to Janspeed for less than the £97.00 !?? I've been quoted up to now. Janspeed say they "may" repair it if I get it to them. Must add, since I put the OE back, I've not noticed the slightest difference in performance, and being quieter it has raised the point at which my wife starts telling me to grow up!!! Regards.
