MG MGF Technical - Better Head Gaskets
Please see my thread HELP ???? and thanks. My local garage now has my engine out and has confirmed I have an HGF. My Dad reckons there is a better quality Head Gasket available than the standard. Does anyone know if this is true or if I am stuck with the standard item and the worry ? Grateful for any advice. Dave Smith |

David, if you can wait a few weeks, Mike Satur will have a special introductory price of £25.00 plus vat and carriage on a new competition head gasket, made from stainless steel and with a new design cylinder sealing ring. http://www.mikesatur.co.uk/fx05.html |

Also consider steel dowels to replace the plastic ones. These can also be purchased from Mike Satur |

I still have concerns with replacing the plastic dowels with steel ones. I know Rover have done it but I cannot see how they have any relationship to head gasket failure. Why were plastic dowels used? So that you can get get the head off after a few years, without lifting the whole car weight by the head, as I have seen done. This is because of electrolytic corrosion between steel head bolts and the alloy head. After a few years how are you going to get the head off? Your can't bore the dowels out from the top. Putting a cutter between the block and head creates a lot of damage. Steel dowels might be OK for race cars, where you have the head off at least once a year, or more. Mick |

May be they used stainless steel ? :) Think positive. Relationship to HGF (IMO) - plastic dowels where to just locate the gasket be4 mounting the head. - steel dowels provide the location between head and block for a longer time. This was done cause of probable side movements beteen head and block. You will find a report from Roger Parker in the archives from *resonance* measurements made visible with *flash light*. Cheers Dieter PS. I mounted the manifold support bracket between manifold and block recently and hope this earlier introduced option prevents a little from this side movements. |

Another option is to go for all Rover parts and feel safe with some guarantee (sp?) after the cash is spent at your MG-Rover dealer. GUG701195HS should be the partnumber of the newer gasket with additional parts. cheers, (with MS head gasket) |
