MG MGF Technical - Big thump on drive way, bent tow eye.. help?

Hello there!

I just went to my friend's 21st, and didn't know all the roads to her place was not sealed! Anyway, went there safely, and on her drive way, my car kinda went down the big dip, and a thump, i was going 'Crap'! Well, i didn't want to go forward (glad I did that!), so I started reversing. Another slight thump on the same spot, knew it was the towing eye. So I zigzaged out reversing on a gravel, and there goes my clutch. (it was downhill) Geez it was bad. Gravel and rear wheel drive and wet.. the wheels didn't hook up well. Got the car reversed without noise this time.

Got home and inspected the car, one of the tow eye is bent. Not seriously about 20 degrees off the normal side. Probably due to the landing on the tow eye. The car behaves as it should.

Should I worry about anything? I looked into the archieve, not many threads about it.

I will get it checked out tomorrow by my mechanic and straighten it out, but anything he and I should look out for?

Thanks in advance
Regards,
Han

Hanah,

I wouldn't worry about it. If the car handles as before you didn't cause any damage. If it is any comfort to you I have bent the towing eyes a couple of times myself. Get a big hammer and straighten them.

Haha.. thanks Spyros. (I think I will leave it for my mechanic to do it for me)

Just been to my mechanic.

He reckoned the car was too low. Well it is pretty low. (no I don't have a lowering knuckles)

So yeah put the car up a little. All even around. Since one side was 10mm lower than the other.

After a quick inspection, hopefully no damage. He told me to get a wheel alignment done, as the car height is now changed and I am getting the inner edge wear. (Doh!) I have done 33000km with the NCTs so far still about 5000km left on it. More with the front if I get the wheel alignment done soon.

Thanks. But if anyone else has more experience with towing eye bending please let me hear it!

Hi,

Hanah, my front towing eye was bent when I received the car. I though it had been done when the car was lashed down on the transporter. Well, I didn't want to think that someone had bashed the road with it, and it had no bash-damage I could see. I haven't bothered to straighten it yet, one day perhaps.

Regards, Kes.

I have bent it and straightened it several times - catches on my up/down/up/down drive - just hope that if it has to do its actual job that it not now suffering from metal fatigue!
