MG MGF Technical - Blower/Fan Unit

First posting on this site, which appears to be a very useful BBS, so here's hoping....

Noticed this weekend that the fan/blower unit does not seem to be working at all in the '1' position. Fine on '2', '3' and '4', but not on '1'. Grovelling around under the dash, all the connections to the switch appear to be fine. Using a long bladed screwdriver as a stethoscope confirms no action at all on the lowest setting. Anyone got any ideas, and/or can anyone tell me how the speed 'thing' works or what I should be checking. Car is a '98 VVC. Thanks in advance for any help. Mike H

Hi Mike, welcome to the BBS! :o)

The problem you've got is that the fan speed resistor pack has burnt out on position '1' - unfortunately, a not uncommon problem :o(

Dieter's web site has a couple of pages of information dealing with this problem. See:

Good luck with it - and hope you are enjoying the seasonally good weather! :o)

I used to have a Rover Metro with the same design of resister pack and it rusted out completely (on the Metro, it's located right underneath a bonnet vent so it gets soaked). It would have been an easy fix to solder a new resistor pack in, but I wasn't able to find one anywhere - I could only get a resistor pack still attached to the motor. £££

I'd make certain your switch and the connections are OK - the fan on my F wouldn't switch off (it stayed on speed 1 even with the switch in the off position) and I ended up fixing it by unplugging and plugging back in the multiconnector a couple of times.

The resistor packs are not expensive from MGR, they are resistance wire, and and are cooled by the airflow to the fan, so if teh fan gets blocked for some reason (leaves for instace) then the resistor burns out.

I haven't done this as I don't expect to use the fan on anything less than 2, if you can hear that you arn't going fast enough! Also I don't think that anything less than 2 you will be able to feel with the roof down.

Hi guys, many thanks for your help and advice (and browsing around - Rob's excellent site). The good news is that the local MGR dealer has agreed to fix this under the warranty given me by the dealer who sold me the car (in May) who is 80 miles down the road! So, credit where credit's due, well done MGR dealers - the car goes in on Monday.

Thanks again, Mike H

Nice one Mike :o) Hope that the car will be returned to you shortly - complete with operational fan! :o)

Just to finish the thread, the dealer collected the car from the office this morning and delivered it back, fixed, around 2-30pm, and all at no cost to myself (apart from the fact that I picked all the car keys up this morning and my good lady had to get a taxi to work! I'll be getting the flowers on the way home!!!)
