MG MGF Technical - Blowing puffing noise on acceleration

When i accelerate at low speeds i get a blowing puffing noise from behind me in the engine area.
As im not technical at all has anyone got any ideas as to what may be the cause.
Im hoping its only a blow form the exhaust.
Any idea of how much it would cost to put rite?
Thanks for your help chris.

I just had a manifold gasket replaced on my '97 1.8 MPi during the annual service. Labour charge for this part of the job was £104 plus VAT but included a check on the charging circuit which revealed a faulty alternator (I later replaced this myself). The gasket itself was £4.73 plus VAT.

Interestingly the leaking gasket made a tapping noise like a stuck hydraulic tappet and had been diagnosed as such before I put the car in for repair.

The puffing noise is likely to be the exhaust manifold gasket. This is a pretty straight forward replacement item. once the engine bay cover is off it should taken more than 30-45 mins.

Check your sparkplugs are tight as well - there have been a few cases of plugs popping out!!!

Use a torque wrench as the actual tightness in quite low because of the alloy head.

Tony raises a good point, this has happened to me a couple of times and is usually characterised by the engine running very roughtly too.

My exhaust sounds exactly as it's blowing like a good 'un. The pipes are perfectly OK, all the gaskets are in place - the noise is actually coming out of the tailpipes. Usual trick of putting a foot over the tailpipe a makes it go silent!
I assume that one of the silencer box internal baffles has come loose.

The MOT checks for leaks, seeing as my system is fine - all the gas is coming out the tailpipes, should it therefore pass the test??

Oh yes, it's the original 1995 factory fitted system, so it hasn't done too badly.

I was begining to think that the original 1995 exhaust systems lasted forever Alan - they're certainly of higher quality than later MGF 'boxes...
