MG MGF Technical - Boiling
Driving along yesterday noticed steam pouring out of the back of the MG,looked at the temp gauge above the red.Pulled over steam was pouring out of the water bottle and the coolent was bubbling hot. What causes the coolent to boil like this? Can anybody recommend a garage preferably in the Telford area as I think the car is now suffering from the dreaded HGF. Thanks |

DK, The others will be along soon enough to confirm, but it sounds pretty much like HGF to me. What does the oil look like? As always, DO NOT DRIVE the car until fixed. Get her towed to a garage. Assume that MGFC is your nearest? Commiserations, Jamie |

Not necessarily an HGF chaps - boiling coolant can result from a loss of pressure in the cooling circuit. Commonest cause for this is a failed coolant expansion tank cap. Cheap to replace from your Rover dealer or from a local branch of Halfords. I assume that there is no evidence of the infamous mayo? Other causes include perforated radiator, corroded under body coolant pipes or a failed/ leaking coolant hose. You need to do the full inspection: remove the engine bay cover, look for evidence of water leaks (particularly from the head/block interface - look below the exhaust manifold at the front right corner of the engine). Check out http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/common_problems/hgf_pages/HGF.htm for more info... |

As steam was bellowing out of the bottle my first thought was the cap but it all happened so quick.Checking the dip stick there are traces of mayo in the oil. I have given the MGF Center a call £450 for cash. |

Traces of mayo can be simply condensation - so fingers crossed that the head gasket hasn't gone. But you're doing the right thing: best to err on the side of caution in a situation like this. If HGF is confirmed, can you complete a submission to http://www.shame.4mg.com/ ? Cheers |

the answer is you can make a lovely cup of tea from the boiling water, a cup of tea cures every problem daren |

Seems I have been lucky this time. Had it checked over by a local garage who gave the Head Gasket the all clear. So it looks like you were right Rob by suggesting the traces of mayo was down to condensation.I will replace the expansion bottle cap and see how it goes. Thanks for the input. |

F.A.O Mr.dk "I have given the MGF Center a call £450 for cash." Does this mean what I think it means? Is this practice common?? |
TAXMAN |
>Does this mean what I think it means? What, the transaction cost is less if you don't have to use a third party clearing service like cheques/CC? |
