MG MGF Technical - Bolt - Spare Wheel

Hi - have got a 3 year old mark 2 F and had to have the spare wheel bolt cut off as it was rusted on. Have been quoted lots of money from my local dealer but just wondered if anyone had got experience of this and what the best approach was - I may have a friendly volunteer who would need some guidance. Thanks Sylv

try at Breakers.

Sold one of my wreck recently for 2 quid.

Regarding the rusty bolt this was a common problem at early MGF and was worth a special bulletin.

I wonder whether they placed out the guy who got advised years ago to grease the bolt with the fat before he installs the wheel.

A common problem, the bolt on my TF was/is well greased - I took it out to check. Another similar issue like this is the wheels, and the need to take the wheels off and apply a little copper grease behind the alloys where they make contact with the hub.

gettting it out you will need a stud remover(not available form halfords) and some plusgas(available from Halfords)

Plusgas is expensive WD40 which is good at penetrating rusted parts, give it a good dowsing, leave 5 mins, repeat several times.
Then get your stud remover, you will want one which grips down with a cam action and teeth, not one which looks like an oversized socket(which are available from halfords, in a pack of 4 but are not as good)
Mine is made by draper and comes as three bits, a black wheel with teeth, a 1/2" extension bar and a large clindrical chunk of metal with three holers in it for the other parts- This grips like the is no tommorow, but you will also need a 1/2" 'breaker bar'
These tools may set you back about £35, a local garage will have them and should do the job for you in 5 minutes for a couple of pints.

I have an MGF Trophy 160 which is not supplied with a spare wheel as standard. I decided after a while that I would prefer to have one, so bought all the bits - wheel, jack, brace and bolt. The bolt I got from Brown and Gammons (www.ukmgparts.co.uk). Give them a ring (I spoke to Malcolm) and tell them what you need. They sent me one, complete with plastic handle, for about £1.80, and that included postage!
As for getting out the rusted bolt - no ideas other than what Will has suggested.

Could try and drill it out??? Depending on the access and how confident you are of not slipping with the drill and leaving nice marks round the recess.

Don't do that

If the rusty thread is on the other side of the panel, meaning the thread inside the front boot is clean, you should be able to simply screw it IN further until it goes right through and falls out the other side. Then fit the new bolt...
