MG MGF Technical - bonnet catch - prevention is better than cure
Hi Guys I know Dieter has posted a similar thread previously about the bonnet catch but it is worth repeating this for prevention purposes. Having recently had the experience of being unable to open the bonnet when going on holiday. I was reassured to find out easy this could have been prevented as the the cable loop had become detached from the hook on the locking mechanism. Whilst I am not going to broadcast on the BBS how the bonnet was opened I would willing tell you if you face the same situation - email me on david.stonehouse@havering.gov.uk. To prevent this happening again just wire up the end of the cable or put a cable tie round it at the point on the hook beyond the cable loop.(if only I had a digital camera it would be easy to show you)Job done. Whilst you are reassembing it remember to grease all the mechanisms and bolts. To access the bonnet catch mechanism, you need to remove the cover plate between the spare wheel housing and the bumper. NB You may also need to realign the plunger on the bonnet with the locking mechanism so dont drop the bonnet just close it to the first notch and adjust the catch. David |

Well done Dave :) This is a picture of the unbolted locking mechanic with cable tie to secure the bracket to the cable end. (MGF though) http://www.mgfcar.de/defects/fronthaube_kabelbinder.jpg Black coloured cable tie. Difficult to see. |

Okay, Dieter, so, you have invented a new game..."Hunt the Tie" !!! :-) It takes a while, but, yes, I can confirm that there is a tie there ! LOL Tony |

LOL ;) >To access the bonnet catch mechanism, you need to remove the cover plate between the spare wheel housing and the bumper. I think I should go out, follow instructions, use a WHITE one and take another picture ;) |
