MG MGF Technical - Braided section of exhaust

On the exhaust there is a corrugated section which has a braided mesh over it.
My mesh has now corroded away so it is only secured at one end and doesn't cover the full length of the corrugated section.
What is the purpose of this mesh?
What are the consequences of running without it?

It's to protect the actual flexi section of pipe under it, so consequences are accelerated aging and resulting failure of the flexi pipe. One of mine lasted years in that state...

Also at mine. I bought a new SS downpipe with flexi-section at MGF10 two years ago, in order to change it at my MGF.
It still rests in the garage, waiting for it's Appearance.

Is this to protect from mechanical damage?

I think so

The flexi section is mild steel, so gets brittle over time if exposed to the elements; the braided cover section is there to keep it protected from inbound dirt/spray/stones/rocks, and probably strengthen it a bit too but only against stretching. Provided your engine stays firmly bolted in place, it doesn't actually flex much even with enthusiastic driving and mechanical stresses are minimal. It will eventually develop a weak spot, and this will quite quickly turn into a fracture, at which point you'll definitely notice an increase in exhaust noise ;o) but that could clearly be years off.

I suspect Dieter's unlikely to part with his F for a while ;o) so a SS version probably a wise investment, however the cheaper mild steel ones can be quite cheap and good for 5 years plus
