MG MGF Technical - brake cylinder prices
i am taking my f in tonight to have the brakes looked at under heavy braking the car pulls drastically to the left, i have an idea its the cylinder any ideas on what i can expect to pay to get it to stop again?? |

ok so now i have been outed as a total amatuer any ideas on what the problem may be and cost of fixing? |

It might be the camber of the road (if so no fix) - Try in a car park It might be tracking, if so then get 4 wheel alignment £40 - £80 It might be faulty ABS, but I am guessing you would feel this pulseing (or dont have it) It might have been water on the disc, in which case it will pull slightly and then straighten. It might be worn pads, but I think they squeel long before you get any detrimental braking performance. Will |

thanks will, don't think its the camber of the road it has started to happen all over the place, don't have abs so that rules that out. It started to happen quiet suddenly (it didnt start as a minor problem and gradualy get worse). does that rule out worn pads? |

Nope, but as I said the pads squeal, MGR found it cheaper to make the brakes moke such a horrid noise that you took your car in, rather than put some wires which light up on the dash. It could be seized calipers, but I don't know how long they are ment to last- it might be worth thinking about a big brake kit if this is the case. Also if the car is out of warrenty then taking it to a local garage might be in order, the FMGSH really relates to the servicing, any good local will be able to do brakes. Will |

If you are able to inspect both the inside and outside of the disc, this may give you a clue to uneven clamping forces (and also compare the left with the right). You are looking for evidence of disc wear being equal (good opportunity to check whether those discs need replacing anyway) and for evidence of surface corrosion that may not be being removed by application of the brakes. I'd also recommend that you check the condition of the tyres and the tyre pressures. |

Mine pulled hard left under heavy braking and the dealer cured this with 4 wheel laser alignment which was also supposed to cure the pull to the left when driving which I'm still trying to get fixed, 4 new tyres, a further Optiflex, 1 rear ball joint and brake pads and calipers cleaned later ... first MOT due next week, any suggestions of a cure? |

uneven tyre pressures - maybe a very slow puncture - can also cause this symptom.. |

I had a similar problem. My MGR dealer (Souls of Olney, nr Northampton) charged a reasonable £44 to do 4-wheel alignment and re-charge the hydrogas. This has cured the pull to the left, but my F now resembles a Land-Rover :/ BTW, wheel alignment problems are linked to excess tyre wear, and at £85 per tyre it can get very expensive if you ignore the problem. |

Could be dodgy damper problem! Bounce car up and down a few times at each corner and it should settle quickly. If not one of the dampers likely to be knackered! Also sticky caliper should show up if you compare pad wear lhs to rhs. |

Another thing that could cause problems under heavy braking is a knackered wheel bearing. Tom |
