MG MGF Technical - Brake servo Support Bracket. Well worth it!

After a great (albeit short) visit to Silverstone on Saturday I've just fitted the new toys bought on the day.

High level break light (dead Easy)
Hi Performance HT leads (dead Easy)
A couple of flag decals under the side repeaters (v cute)
AND
A Servo Support Bracket.

I'd read about this on Rob's excellent site http://www.mgf.4mg.com/ a while ago. The idea of the servo moving so much was a little surprising so I decided to invest in the support bracket from Brown and Gammons 20 quid or so. After 45mins (not bad I reckon) I have the thing fitted and I must say the difference is remarkable, There is none of that sponginess at the bottom of the brake pedal travel, well worth the money.

A well worth while investment for any of the BBS crew who love driving there MG's. Just do it....

Tim

Rob,

Just a couple of notes for your web site.

1. I found it a lot easier to release the top bolt on the servo first. This allows a little more rotation on the bracket to allow access to undo the bottom bolt.

2. The Brown & Gammons bracket now comes with a doubler plate.

Hope you did well at Silverstone.

Hi Tim,
well done - the reinforcement for the servo is something that should been done in production a long time ago ! Anyone who knows if this is fitted on the TF ? From the "dead easy" on the HT-leads I assume You got a 1.8i and not the VVC ;)

BR, Carl.

Hi Tim,

thanks for your thoughts - if I recall correctly, I did it the same way as you - namely, to undo the top bolt first.

Good to hear that the bracket now comes with a suitable doubler plate! I think that the lads at B&G read this site from time to time - so good for them for responding to the need, and adding to this extremely useful mod :o)

Cheers

Rob

PS Silverstone has now left a huge hole in the bank account, but I'm a happy bunny! :o) The sprint went well - got a time of 58.2 sec which is good and an improvement on last year - and won a little pot for my efforts :o)
Rob Bell

Rob,

Well done with your result.

Did you manage to buy any new toys or was the hole in the bank account caused by Tyres & esential race stuff.....
tim woolcott

Nope, the sprint proved to be most inexpensive Tim - and huge fun (and the admission fee included two complimentary weekend tickets - not bad! :o)). Nope, cost incurred was on new toys and other bits and bobs :o)

A dangerous place to visit: too many people to talk to who'll gladly take your cash! LOL Big bulk of bill incurred by purchasing a new exhaust and Sun mate from Mike - looking forward to fitting the exhaust, and will take pictures whilst I'm at it :o)
Rob Bell

Rob,

Did you not have a SS Exhaust already.....?

Have splashed out the cash on a TTB yet....?
tim woolcott

Yup, you're right Tim, I already have a perfectly good SS exhaust. I've had it for a couple of years now - and I think it's excellent (it's Trevor Taylor's Fxtreme system). But I fancy a change... okay I know that this sounds mad, but as I intend to keep the car for a few more years yet, these small mods and changes keeps the car 'fresh' and stops me going out and spending even more money on a brand new car!!! ;o)) ROFL

Yup, have the TTB (thanks JT!) which will be fitted shortly. :o)
Rob Bell

Rob,

Completely agree with buying toys to refresh interest in the car. I like you, have had the car for 6 years but still having great fun and no intention on changing. Next, cheapy up-grade, might be compliance washers on the suspension but I wanted to ask you about ease of fitting. Do they make a difference....? But really saving up for leather interior to finally get rid of the dreadful cloth affair.

Also, I Just had a thought cross my mind. If changing to 16" wheels (another potential expense, which this time the Girlfriend actually approves of) is there an implication on BHP at wheels... Would it as a true percentage increase of wheel diameter (6% increase if changing to 16")....? Also, what are the implications on recalibrating the Speedo..... I know most people ignore, I assume the Trophy has a different speedo grearing....

the larger wheels have 'shorter' tyres (IYSWIM) so the roling surface is the same, ie, no change in acceleration or speedo.

I don't think the overall radius of the wheels changes much from 15-16" as the tyres are lower profile. i havn't recalibrated my spedo, and don't know anyone else who has.
Kingsley

I agree with the guys here, no problems with 16" wheels with 215/45 profile rubber - the rolling circumference is practically identical to the 205/50 R15 tyres fitted to the rear wheels. No need for speedo recalibration. One of those easy upgrades - just a straight swap. Interestingly, I have a set of 16" abby style wheels to fit to my MGF sitting in the garage for when the Bridgestones on my 15" wheels wear out :o)

Compliance bushes - do you mean the spacers you can buy from B&G? I had these fitted at a service some years back, but Neil fitted these himself. All you need is a torque wrench - undo the nut on the tie-bar, slip off the link, pop on the spacers and reassemble - it's pretty intuitive (see the tie bar bush upgrade for pictures of the different tie bar bush upgrade options, including spacers). The other area I'd recommend looking at are the damper bushes. Mine were pretty appalling when I looked at them last year. I eventually went down the Techspeed suspension upgrade route, but an alternative path is via Mike Satur's catalogue - these rubber bits can be readily be replaced by polyurethane. According to Richard Eaton, this gives an excellent result.

Hmm - I think you're on a similar wavelength to me Tim - been thinking of upgrading the interior of my F too. Just waiting for someone to wipe out a TF with an alcantara interior in black... ;o)
Rob Bell

So, if the wheels are pretty much the same diameter with lower profile rubber why is it recommended to fit the suspension stops when changing to 16" wheels Huh.....?

Rob,

I'll be racing you to Midlandmgf to get the TF seats then..... :o)
tim woolcott

Tim, those bump stops are a conspiracy! Well, you'd think it was if you've ever read the gigabytes of archives dedicated to these items.

In fact they are not very different from the standard bump stops. Just slightly strengthened. Dimentionally, they're practically identical.

You don't need 'em. ;o)

Right, the race to the TF interior is on then! ;o) [Murry Walker's voice: "And it's go, go GO! for the 2002 MGF interior upgrade race...!"]

Tim

Bored of doing advertising analysis, thought I'd check this. My 16" wheels have 215/40s and from Robs post the 15" are shod with 205/50s the difference is 8mm. So why do they have bump stops?

Thought it was a con..... Ta for the analysis DJ
